Did you line the crate with anything? I had plans to do this but when Iadded water to box it warped.

I didn't line this one but I have lined others. This one is just really well-constructed with amazingly good wood. There is minor warpage but that's after years outdoors through the summer and winter months.

Mache crate here.

I use stuff from the hardware store that is sold as a plastic dropcloth for painting. Pond liner would work. I have used plastic bags on small containers like the one in which I grew mache.

Awesome idea. I just ordered some heirloom lettuce seeds so I will be looking for a place to plant them...a wine crate sounds so perfect and rustic.

Have you used sub-irrigated grow boxes such as the EarthBox or home made versions? They save water, time and will increase productivity over top watered planters or in-ground planting.
