I like both photos. I love the cold purple tones of the defender and the warm orange tones of the challenger. The big difference is the small boat, that gives the challenger an interesting story.

I like the serenity in the defender's shot, and the color range. Here, I'm less moved by the subject, and, contrary to to diimitris, I don't think the motor boat is a positive element.

The defender's image in terms of technical rendition is highly polished but lacks a potent foreground anchor. The challenger's seems better weighted and balanced but lacks that same polish. It's the warmth of this one that makes it slightly more inviting.

I really like the composition of this picture, and the light and colours in the clouds. But when viewing both images in large, I find the detail and sharpness nicer in the defender's photo. Which has also a great water effect and colours. In this case,

The axial element in both photographs is color, and on both its ambrosial. The boat gives this photograph the extra story.

The challenger might have an extra physical element, but the way I look at it, the soft motion blur of the ocean in the defender *is* its extra physical element. For me, with this type of photograph it comes down to image quality, and the defender outstrips this one. Even in the small size shown here, there is obvious noise in the dark regions of the clouds along the horizon.

I like the color of the challenger's image, and a more interesting sky. The boat is perfectly placed in the scene. There is a little extra noise, but I'll take it for the more detail and dynamic light.
