Any idea what this flower is? A friend who is a professional gardener gave me a whole bunch of these plants she had removed from a clients garden.... they sat all summer without any sign of flowering and I was about to give up on them but they are "late bloomers" and this monarch spent a good hour sipping on this one, even fending off bees to do it. I suspect the monarch is fueling itself for the trip south.

flowrbx identified the flower as a fall blooming Sedum called Autum Joy

Monarch info:
World wildlife

monarch watch. Ah ha check it out, this is a female!

Journey South GREAT site for kids and teachers. They follow the migrations of various animals in spring and fall. Anyone can contribute information.

I need to look up the life cycle of the monarch..... This pupae couldn't have become this butterfly so fast could it.

Gorgeous I almost posted another Monarch on those wild asters today, but went with just the asters instead!

It's so nice they are still around, I thought they all would have left by now.

such an amazing monarch photo! I love the colors of the pink and the green in the background. This would be a perfect addition in the monarch group.

Gale, I believe this is the fall-blooming sedum called "Autumn Joy". It has become very popular in the last few years. It's easy to grow and expands pretty readily and a real butterfly magnet in the fall. :)

This is a wonderful capture! The migrators are becoming quite numerous here but I have yet to get a single photo!

Sedum, who knew?! I had no idea they liked it. That is so cool. I wonder if the butterfly will lay eggs that hatch next spring. It seems like it is late to start migrating from way up there, but maybe not.

Today I was whale watching about 20 miles offshore and a monarch butterfly flew over us... it was headed west.

So the monarchs are migrating now? Is it cold up there at night?

Not really freezing yet but getting chilly. I suspect this one was stocking up for the migration and I wonder if I will see them feeding again .... I guess they don't all migrate do they?
