p.s. Who goes to the LIBRARY for FUN? Moreover, who takes PICTURES at the library, OF the library? Yes, that would be I - guilty on both accounts. SUCH a NERD, it's unbelievable. You know you want to see library pictures, though. They're coming sometime later.
ALSO: I didn't even have to crop this shot. It came out exactly like this, because I'm slightly inept (uhh, yeah?) at photographing myself.

I love the colour of your hijab. You must (no
choice) tell me how you tie it like that!

Look at that eyebrow :O Thats a perfect eye
brow :O
You know, till I was almost 12 years old, I
had colorless eye brows. My aunties all the
time teased me about it and I would use black
pens to make em on the face (ahh, to be young
and clueless). Even now I don't have that
perfect eye brow.
And yes how do you tie it up like that, I
did not notice it the first time in the other
head wrap pic but now I do. Its so neatly
done up.
Oh and I learned a neat trick to self
portraits. Use mirrors for the extra "I
did not take the pic" effect.

It's not a perfect eyebrow. My eyebrows have
serious issues - the two never look the same.
Also, this freakily makes me sound hella
girly, so I'll shut up now. (But hey, at
least I never have to use black pens on mine!
hahaha)
Re. tying the headwrap:
1. Hair in a doubled-up ponytail or bun.
More hair=better headwrap, I think.
2. Bandanna over that is key, to keep the
scarf from sliding around over one's hair.
3. Take the scarf, place it over your head
(little bit of fabric on one side, most of it
on the other), pin it with a safety pin at
the back of your neck, so it's all tight and
in place.
4. Wrap all the excess fabric around your
bun.
5. Pin the end of the fabric with another
safety pin wherever it ends up.
Did that all make sense? It's all trial and
error. You get better at it as you go along.
(Sorry, you're not a girl, TDH, but
hopefully this'll help SHAAI out, since I
never answered her question!)

Hey I asked because by the end of June I will
probably have real nice brown locks of my
own.
Don't start looking at me with weird eyes
now. Doing it for a change (A)

you have the best headwraps I've seen ever...
I never thought headwraps could be a fashion
statement, but with you that's what they
are... someday if you are in town, you should
do some headwraps for a photoshoot!

Thank you so much, Anil. You've always left
some of the loveliest comments I remember on
my photos - so much appreciated. =)
Where's "in town" for you?
...Wait, I just checked. Okay, so Phoenix
is supposed to be nice and warm all the time.
I am SO there, dude. Will let you know if I
ever swing by. =)
Which reminds me, there was a professional
photography in the Bay a few weeks ago. She's
young and desi and Muslim, based in Chicago,
and she wants to put together a coffee-table
sort of book of photographs of Muslim women
from across the U.S. who wear the headscarf.
Pretty interesting project, and a friend of
mine convinced me to let the lady take some
photos of me while she was in the Bay. Felt
really awkward though, since I have no idea
how to behave when people (besides my
friends) focus their cameras on me. I kept
asking, "Am I supposed to SMILE? Am I
supposed to LOOK AT YOU?"
She replied, "You can do whatever you
want!" What the hell, yaar. Give me some
direction! I was wearing these pants that day, though, so that was fun.
While I'm rambling, I might as well add
that another Muslim woman who heard of this
project asked me, "You're willing to be
part of something like THAT?" Like, why
put yourself into the stereotypical corner of
a Muslim hijabi. I guess she meant, You're
more than just a Muslim woman who wears
hijab. - WHICH, actually, is the entire point
of the project. There are some AMAZING women
I know so far who are profiled in this
project, and their lives are about so much
more than what they wear on their heads.
Oh, but the second part of my response to
the naysayer was that I'm sure they needed
some variety in the book project, and I'm all
for providing variety if it means we get some
headwrap shots in there, too. =) Gotta
represent the different thing, too, you know.
So yeah, Anil , getting back to your point, I do wear the
headwrap both for religious modesty as well
as (I gotta admit) for fashion. It's just
become part of my style. Can't imagine
wearing hijab any other way now.
Okay, sorry for subjecting all y'all to
that essay. THE END.

Phoenix is a great place, as long as you
avoid it between may and october.
About direction.. sometimes I take pictures
of girls where they want to look sexy, which
means that I have to give some direction on
how to pose, but sometimes all I want to do
is capture the real person in front of me. It
helps if I know the person well since it lets
them relax and just interact with you. Or
have a friend that can interact with them,
while I keep talking and snapping. I love the
pictures I get out of those shoots because
they are natural and remind me of the person,
while the 'posed' ones are as plasticky as a
magazine photograph. I dont usually post
those people shots, but you might enjoy them,
so here's a few galleries of such people

About the headwrap.. be it modesty, or
style - I cannot fail to appreciate beauty
and taste. I'm a total sucker for both.
