The sign itself is an eyesore, but wow, looks like there are great positive vibes emanating from here. A traditionalist imam on iTunes, who knows how to talk to Americans... exactly what we need more of.

Hope you get a chance to photographically document more of the events that take place here.

Khalid, I don't know if I would call it an eyesore exactly, but it IS one of those typical sort of masjid signs, yeah. Except for the EVERYONE IS WELCOME part, of course. ;) It's an extremely humble sort of building/location, but you're exactly right - the experience is filled with positive vibes, and there are few masajid I could say that about.

p.s. Are you ever going to take any more photos and upload 'em to flickr? =)

The sign was donated by a company who understood our little masjid had very little money to spare. Before this there was no sign whatsoever. I can't tell you how many people have come to Islam
because they were driving by and saw that sign. El Humduleelah even if it isn't the most beautiful !!

Sister Khadijah, how your comment made me smile! =) First of all, I'm honored you stopped by, and commented, too. Secondly, Masjid al-Iman is the most beautiful masjid I have ever attended, and it breaks my heart I have not been able to go to jummah there for nearly five months now. I keep consoling myself that someday soon my schedule will change and then I'll be back in Oakland on Fridays.

Leena's comment ("Where everyone is welcome" -- can there be such a place? I pray so.) sums up the distrust/incredulousness/cynicism many of us feel towards masjids. Masjid al-Iman is the first masjid that has ever regularly made me feel at home, the first masjid that ever made me look forward to prayers in congregation, and the first masjid that made me feel I left behind a piece of my heart on MLK the day I was unable to continue attending jummah prayers there. Those who've made the masjid the loving, welcoming place it is deserve all that is good and beautiful.
