I need clothes

I need clothes by yaznotjaz.
...and I'm picky about what I like. The funny thing is, when it comes to desi clothes, what I like is so simple - and that's the part people have issues understanding.

Adnan's Khat [letter] footoo with the Urdu thrown in made me smile so much, and pulled me out of my fake flickr hiatus. For now, anyway.

Backstory: The daddy-o left a couple of days ago on a last-minute trip to the motherland, for two weeks, and agreed to get a few things sewn for me and the sister while he's there.

This is unusual only because:
1. We never get our clothes sewn in the motherland and sent to us (I have my mother and my sister to sew estuff for me, so why leave it to people who don't know/understand how I like to dress?)

2. In May, I ran into some girl somewhere and, when I mentioned my mom was in the motherland, she giggled and said, 'Oh, you must be so excited to be getting new clothes!'
'No,' I said in my coldest voice, 'we had a death in the family and we're all busy with duas and guests. Clothes from the motherland are not at the top of my list at the moment.' [Or at any moment, actually.]

She looked taken aback, and then continued conversing about dessert options with other folks, and then came back to me two minutes later with, 'Are you okay?' Which I hate being asked, dammit. Which pretty much made me want to stab her with my dessert fork.

The end.

PS: Jesus, peace be upon him, I don't know how the hell I went off on that tangent. Okay, so the strips of tape say, Iss say Yasmine kayliyay aik kameez banaani chahiyay. [Roughly: 'Make a shirt for Yasmine out of this.' I don't believe in shalwar - that's why black slacks were invented, and jeans for the informal wear.]

Okay, now you can go back to making fun of my Urdu handwriting. I fully blame the ridiculousness on the jumbo Sharpie, and I promise it looks better when I use my favorite micro-point pens. That is all.

Well, be satisfied with the fact that I was able to read what you wrote just fine.

And what's up with the shalwar-phobia? I doubt they'd be making you some in Hammer pants eshtyle. Unless you wanted some, of course.

O,
nooooo. just say no to shalwar! i'm totally doing that criss-cross hex symbol with my fingers right now, to ward off any shalwar-related wibes you send my way. well, after i finish typing.

my buddy on gchat right now has already conveyed to me that:
1. my handwriting is at the 5th grade level
2. i spelled 'kameez' wrong. it's supposed to be with a 'kaaf' and a 'duaad.' dammit! who the hell decided there should be at least four different letters pronounced like 'z' in the urdu alphabet?! and how come i was so ROCKING at the urdu when i was 14, and now i suck?

Obviously my Urdu (reading-wise anyway) is at a 5th-grade level because I wouldn't have know the difference. Another thing with Urdu:

"Ammi, how do you know if a noun is masculine or feminine?"

"Well beta, if it ends in 'a' then it's probably masculine, and if it ends in 'i" then it's feminine"

"But what if the noun doesn't end in 'a' or 'i'?"

"Well, that's what the Urdu qaida is for. Jaao. Paro."

Uh, gee. Thanks, Mom.

---------------

I also have a bunch of shalwar kameezes from the motherland (Hammer pants-style). Wear them on Eid and that's about it. Although I may take Waqas' suggestion and pull mine to my neck and see what happens.

lerki, I read it as " Yasmine kay liayya aik KAMEEN banani chahiya" and then i thought, ' I have heard of kameena, which is not a very nice word to say but the hell is a kameen?
hahahah

Thankyou so much for your writing/description. Otherwise, i would be totally making up some more ..um..bad words.

Come over to my place yazzo and i'll show you that all shalwars are not THAT bad looking as hammer pants. Shalwars have progressed so much over the years and if its the
cummerbund related issues (see link for details and laughs from our past discussions), then you need not to worry ..their are so many slick and easy options available. Plus, there are other fusion options present too for a long time. Maria B, whose link i gave above is a stylish designer and may be we can peruse her stuff when we go to meet Zana in london together.

come to my place (after my house guests leave ) and i 'll give you a proper presentation ;)

Plus... getting them stitched from back home is a good idea. I hope they come back as you want them. Other wise you can wait for me to buy a sewing machine and learn sewing and i'll be your Desi Designer :D

Don't worry, Y. I got your back. I figured out you were trying to do a "ze" and not "nun".

Although I think you should trademark "kameen" and attach it to a product people can buy for people they don't like. You could make crores!

your urdu handwriting is lovely honey, alot better than mine! in fact i haven't written anything in ages... gone are those days when i used to write letters to my pakistani pen pal friend nazia urf 'baby' =)

you know seriously honey, there are some great darzis i can recommend in our neck of the woods, so i know you said this isn't priority for you at the moment, it's still better to get something you want rather than something you hate.

how come your dad left for pakistan? oks i'm finally replying to your two emails right NOW x

I love your urdu scribblings, much better than mine. Only your Zaal seems a bit too round, may be you are paitu thats why ;)

I echo Ayesha...read it Kameene, instead of kameez :)

And I asked...I mean I ASKED YOU...when I left for Pakistan couple of months back about clothes...yes I remember vividly I DID ASK YOU :)

I hope your father's visit is just a regular...happy happy...all is well kind of visit to motherland :)

Yaz, I almost thought you were writing in Arabic "ismee Yasmeen" my name is Yasmeen -- and then I realized I could go no further and that it's Urdu of course!! (duh ;o)) silly me!!)
anyway, I love your handwriting here. And Sharpies make such comfortingly thick smooth lines on paper!!

I just looked at some of the party wear and bridal outfits on the Maria B link that Ayesha posted and actually contemplated buying one or two.. she's got some really nice stuff. thanks for the link Ayesha!! and if you guys plan to go to their store, can I ask you to haggle on an outfit or two for me??? :D you know I'd do it for you if you wanted something from Algiers!! (but now that I think of it, I can't imagine what you guys would want from Algiers.. clearly the subcontinent has wayyy better shopping options.. which explains why we import so much from there now!! :o))

I read what you wrote just fine, too. Do you do your yas funny or is that how it's written in Urdu, i.e. at the end of sey and chahyey? This is funny because I know Arabic (rusty) and Hindi (fluent) and never realized that Urdu was Hindi written in Arabic script for the most part. Does this mean I know Urdu, too?

The Zair in "ISS" and how you have written "Chahiay" feels that you'r a urdu GURU but this goes wrong in case of "KAMEEN"..:) Anyway its a good effort and we all must appreciate it. (y)

everyone,
it's eid again tomorrow and i was thinking about shalwar-kameez again (because i'm going to be wearing a pair tomorrow. sigh), and your comments on this footoo re. my crackheaded urdu handwriting and kameenas and shalwar-talk cracked me the hell up. thanks for the laughs, buddy boys!

I think you should trademark "kameen" and attach it to a product people can buy for people they don't like. You could make crores!

:) lovely! don't your parents get mad though? at you not being in shalwar kameez on eid day? my mum goes bananas! I had my GAP tracksuit on with my rooh afza tea shirt and my penguin socks for most of eid day and then when mum really started going mad haha! I changed into a shalwar kameez for like half hour and then I wore my jeans and a big chunky knit that came up to my knees and went out to do some uni group study :) mum was not impressed!

zana,
it was a pretty low-key eid, actually - we didn't spend it with the relatives this time, so it was a very chill day at home that didn't really feel much like eid, once the salah was over. so, we all came home and changed and had lunch and TOOK NAPS and then celebrated by making chapli kabob for dinner. ;) yummy!

PS: LOWVE that 'i [heart] rooh afza' tshirt of yours! highfive!
