For Maddie and V, who like boats

For Maddie and V, who like boats by yaznotjaz.
Ayesha and I went to hang out in Chinatown in San Francisco on Sunday. Like most of our hangingout sessions, 95% of it was completely unplanned. Read her take on the day, here.

The San Francisco Society of Fine Arts was hosting an art showing at Union Square that afternoon. Ayesha and I wandered through, and checked out the paintings and photographs, as all the artists sat quietly by their respective pieces and watched the people meander through.

Ayesha and I were especially charmed by Youngbok Park's photographs of Japan and San Francisco. This is his beautiful photograph of Mendocino. View it on his website, HERE.

As soon as I saw this photograph, printed large and framed, I was reminded of the flickr folks. "I wonder if he has a business card," I muttered to Ayesha. I busted out my little moleskine to write down his name, so that I could look it up later, but then Ayesha interrupted me: "Yaz, he has a card!" The photographer himself, sitting nearby his photographs, smiled and handed me his card.

"I have friends who love boats," I explained. "This is beautiful, and I think they might like to see it, too."

"Your photographs are gorgeous," I added. "Thanks so much for sharing these." I took his card. As I was turning to walk away, he swiftly extended his hand once more, almost without even looking at me. Within his hand was a postcard of his lovely boat photo. I took the postcard, too, and couldn't help but laugh. "Thank you!"
He nodded quietly.

So sweet, and such a gift.

Someday, I will be a dude with a sailboat and no plans.
(Also, I will learn how to swim.)

~ good morning you lovely friend of mine ~ i cannot sleep for
dreaming this is such a lovely post ~

someday i shall be a girl with a houseboat and i will have
you over for a little pleasant drifting on the water
with chai ...erm...sorry....cranberry juice to offer you:)

this summer i was at a cottage outside toronto and there was a
beautiful vintage canoe somewhat like the boat in this
sublime photo ~ and i cannot tell you the magic of drifting
quietly on moonbegotten waters
~ so meditative and your mind just drifts so peacefully:)

i am really looking at this photo on his card as the
black and white is so hauntingly beautiful ~
i am going to visit Youngbok Park's website and have a
peek around

I can see you somehow on a sailboat Yaz ~ a sailboat
suits you ~ so billowy and stylin' and timeless:)

I heard that in Japanese culture, it is considered very rude to write on one's business card.

That was such a fun day! And this picture was gorgeous. =)

And yes, it is incredibly rude to write on someone's business card in Nihon.

:-) Thanks Yaz for the good wibes. We still aspire for the open skies and the open vaters.

Union square is pretty cool that way. In my last visit I chanced upon a similar gathering. The artists are very approachable at these events and it's good fun chatting with them.

i actually took swimming lessons when i was around 8. i made it through the 6 weeks or vatewer of beginner's lessons, but, on the last day, we had a little test. in order to make it to the next level, we had to prove we could stay afloat by treading water for at least 60 seconds. i made it to, like, 55 seconds, and that was that.

looks like, along with a few of you non-swimming folks, i'm in good company. but we gotta work on this, yaars, seriously. what're we going to do when we're between the devil and the deep blue sea?

i've just made a resolution to begin swimming this year. hey, it's february, but the sky's gorgeously blue outside my window today. the weather will only get warmer, no? it'll be awesome to swim this summer.

psshhh, any hanging out session with Zana is going to involve homemade cupcakes anyway, and THAT is the way to my heart.

V, if i didn't inhale as much of the dim sum as you did, it was only because i was full off the lemon bar and hot choco that you balked at, mr. picky. that is ALL.

Awwwrightt!!! I finally nagged someone into submission. It must be an early onset of middleagery. You must address me as BaoJi from this moment on. Seriously though, I was disturbed by a couple of tragic incidents last summer involving desis and near-water activities. Floating is a good skill to have. You never know when it comes in useful.

V,
i don't know what 'baoji' means. can i call you 'babaji' instead? okay, BABA. =) stop being all bitter and fistshaking-y. i know you weren't kidding about the snow, but you might be happy to know that i've invited myself over to flo's for some maple syrup and all that goes with it (snow? pancakes?). apparently, friends are welcome. you should come with.

anjum,
whoa, whoa. slow there, yaara. baby steps, baby steps! or, in my case, KIDDIE POOL. hahaha. i don't know whether 2008 will see me in the OCEAN. i gotta step carefully, ya know! but i did go on yelp today and look up some gyms and swimming pools/centers/lessons, and now i feel so smart and productive. god, i freakin' love yelp.

hehe, kiddie pool, ocean.. same diff. ;) no seriously, take your time girl, but be attentive of your goal. don't let 2008 pass by unnoticed, inshallah.

just remember, if the water in the kiddie pool is warm - its not because it's a heated pool! ;o)
