Detail of large incense burner, El Mogote, Oaxaca

Detail of large incense burner, El Mogote, Oaxaca

El Mogote is one of the earliest known settlements in Mexico, a precursor to Monte Alban. This urn sits in a dim museum behind glass. I've done all I could to bring out the detail by blocking out the background with blue and shooting right against the glass.

Cocijo

Cocijo

Representation of the Zapotec god of rain and lightening found at Monte Alban, a ruin at the summit of a large range of hills overlooking the city of Oaxaca in the valley below. I can see the outlines of some of the pyramids of Monte Alban from the roof of my apartment.

Basilica de la Soledad, Oaxaca

This Baroque church was built in the 1680s, and is one of the most beautiful and beautifully situated churches in Oaxaca. The large plaza is often used for public events, concerts and dances.
