Why is the rug so far away from the couch?

I agree, I totally want to see the rug and
whole conversation area centered with the
couch. I'd even leave the two chairs by the
window maybe around a small table and still
move the rug to the couch. And then maybe
stick a coffee table in front of that couch.
The flow in this room seems very odd to me
right now.

i like it how it is, the rug and 2 chairs
define an informal area separate from the
couch->TV axis. one where i could imagine
you relax, sprawl out on the rug, while a
friend reads sitting on one of the eames'.
it also annoys me personally the typical
couch/rug/coffee-table/tv ensemble.
the present setup shows a freedom and (i
hope) a result of particular and individual
user requirements.

But does the typical user require a bowling
alley between the couch and the tv? I'd still
like to see a coffee table there and maybe
another rug to define it as a separate space,
now it just looks like you wanted a place to
skate around in your socks. And if that's
true, then go for it and ignore me. This just
makes the couch look very lonely to me.

aj, i should add - i love empty spaces, i am
always trying to create 'bowling alleys'.
the proliferation of coffee-tables in ppls
apartments is just getting outta hand.

Fair enoug, you'd like our living room, we
don't have a coffee table because we have
multiple band practices there. But I want to
know what is the purpose of this bowling
alley in particular. Yoga?

mini-ballroom dancing. Actually, I just
wanted to create a space for reading and
lounging like p2an said. I do plan to get a
coffee table though just because my friends
have no where to set their beers.

after looking at your photos - have you
considered rotating the TV and the couch 90
degrees? the red ikea stand with the tv would
have its back to the bed"room" -
from the side of the bed put a divider like
you were saying, or drawers for clothing.
rotate the couch 90 too. then you get 2
seating areas, which is a good or a bad thing
depending on you. :-)
basically the reason everyone are saying
you should move the couch off the window wall
(they mean move off far enough to walk
between the couch and the window) is because
all of your things are "stuck to a
wall" right now. sofas are large
objects, they don't move if you leave them in
the middle of the room! (unlike cats...
hehehe)
i love the rug, the eames, the tv, the
sofa, the ikea red thing (i wish we had space
for it in our place). you've got taste!

What about moving the couch to where it's
facing the windows, but first pull the rug
with the chairs out from the wall a bit.
Then, move the tv/stand to the well where the
floor lamp is .. and then do the set of
bookcases for the room divider behind the
couch. The bedroom part of the room just
enlarged instantly. Perhaps the lamp could
be moved between the chairs while you're
waiting on finding a coffee table and/or
small table between the chairs? It looks
like a great view I think the couch facing
the windows would be perfect!
(and may I suggest some pillows and accent
pieces in the red color the same as the tv
stand so it doesn't stand out so much, but is
highlighted with complimentary objects?)
