El Jobean Cemetery |
From 1887 - 1923, El Jobean Cemetery was
a dumping ground for the black prisoners
who were leased as workers for the
turpentine camps. They were all starved,
abused and beaten to death. Many of the
residents who were children during the
1920's can remember seeing flogging
posts at the camps.
El Jobean Cemetery had slightly more
organised burials for citizens after
that time until 1966. Any wooden
monuments that marked the graves have
deteriorated.
Charlotte County has done nothing for
the remains of the occupants of this
cemetery since receiving the property as
a gift in 1994. There is not even an
address for this cemetery, only basic
directions.
