This reminds me of Detroit, Michigan of the depressed auto industry, when mostly foreign built cars today are purchased by Americans driven in our cities and freeways.
ozarkhighlander [deleted] (26 months ago )
Very haunting; a grim reminder for us all.
beachygirl1 (26 months ago )
@firearms; When is the last time you were in Detroit? Your comment is ridiculous. Detroit has its areas of decay, just like any big city does, but it looks nothing like a nuclear war zone. Do you express your political views everywhere you go...no matter how inappropriate? BTW, these are amazing photos.
archittt (26 months ago )
Beachygirl you are correct doesn't look a thing like Detroit. There are no drug addicts, Crack Whores, Pimps, homeless drunks, or de-institutionalized insane, stripped stolen cars or anything else hanging out in these empty buildings.
EMSurfer (26 months ago )
Firearms makes his ridiculous political comments probably while driving a Ford truck made in Mexico, without realizing many foreign automakers like Toyota build their cars in the United States of America. Try asking the US automakers to bring their assembly plants back to Detroit instead of building in Mexico.
kim_hester (26 months ago )
Archittt...Your comment is SO Right On! Ever wonder why Arse-Hats such the Beachygirl comments enough to piss off someone, yet leaves no information to back up the "alleged political abuse." Yes, that quote was a joke! But, I did check out your photos am am wondering what that awesome car on your pix? I looks a lot like the GTO, but bigger, and a convertable...appreciate the info, thanks! And, YES, beachygirl, I've been to Detroit in the last year, and it is miserable...and it has the highest crime rate in the u.s.a, last time i checked! ==============

Ooops! I, myself, ended sounded like an arse-hat in the last post. Sorry. It shouldd have read, "But I did check out your photos, AND am wondering what kind of car the awesome convertible is in your pix?? IT looks a bit look like a GTO, yet bigger...." I would appreciate the info, Thanks! And, YES, beachygirl, I have been been to Detroit within the year, and it is Miserable. Also, it has one one the highest crime rates of any city in the U,S.A!

Sadly, I was thinking the same thing as others when looking at these pics. Short of the radiation, there are a lot of places that resemble this in Detroit, but there are great places too, Comerica Park, the Fox, the Ren Cen, Greek Town. It's the suburbs of Detroit that I find much scarier than the city proper! THese photos are sad because they had to abandon these places due to the radiation, not the loss of business or lack of care. Both situations have their own misery attached, but I can't say anyone can compare Detroit to Pripyat if you don't live here or near here, which I do.

I wanna know how long after we bombed Nagasaki and Hiroshima did the japanese move back in to those cities, doesn't seem like they were too worried about nuke fallout, or nuke contamination in those days, if those cities are now inhabited, and there is no discussion about mutant japanese or anything like that, or maybe it was just never reported, anyone have a clue, why or how those cities are now a viable part of japan today???!!???

I'm not sure what's more sad, a city left unlivable by an accident like this, or cities left unlivable by capitalistic greed of sending jobs elsewhere. Both effect the lives of people, but one's done intentially and can be fixed.
the truth now (25 months ago )
@ beachygirl1... maybe before you try and give people lessons on things you seemingly don't know everything about... you should at least have a little correct info. on what you are talking about in the first place... the Chernobyl Disaster was not the result of nuclear war... it was an accident caused by human error, uncareful soviets, and an outdated poorly designed power structure.

it amazes me how most ppl posting are bashing detroit, these pics represent what will eventually happen at every nuclear power plant, not nesecarily in our lifetime but somewhere down the line. it was a power we were not ready for and more than likely should never have invented. oh and keep your ignorant remarks in mind when your town looses most of its industry to foreign shores just because its cheaper to produce the products there, and ppl become homeless bc they are loosing their homes because they have to choose between food for their children or the house payments that before they could afford, and there are no funds to fix up or tear down places that need attention so desperately. you cant tell me that your city or town doesnt have a corrupt person in office. they are everywhere. but like i said keep your comments in mind bc if it happens to you, we will help you just a much as you helped us. i might not be from detroit but im close enough to give a darn.

I'm originally from Detroit, Michigan and it doesn't look anything like the above pictures now, but since a lot of people are moving from there and heading here to the Suburbs I wouldn't be surprise. I will never go back to living in Detroit, I never liked Detroit! I like where I am now but the ghetto people are moving this way.....it's like a herd of buffalo migrating to better land but messing it up for the others that were already here!
Msrising (25 months ago )
Well I'm from Detroit and the comments others make does not really matter too much. What you have are those who just don't know, who assume the worst and one cannot forget the color barrier that many must still overcome. Detroit is mostly black as I am however the problems within Detroit did not come from the citizens themselves as we must all know over the past ten or twenty years the population has changed so blame the circumstances on the people who really need to take the blame and that would be the govenor, engler to be exact as far as the street walking insane, the drug addicts and winos make up a portion of this population but lets be real, colored people have little control over what can cross borders and coke is not made here, Most buildings are owned by whites that do not reside here nor do they pay their taxes, hookers are everywhere just ask your mother whoever said that, and well most of us are doing just fine and not crying over spilled milk you see things have always been dire for us colored folk so this is not an issue. It's only an issue with those who thought they had something they didn't really have. The american dream came crashing down on whites the most us blacks of detroit have always had it worse than our next door white counterparts so yeah, people can talk shit but we are the ones that get to laugh at your losses and say so, how does it fee? lmao

Its very sad, society in the US today....look at the photos, remember history, read about it again, have some humanity, and maybe some respect to the disasters that have happened, the people that have died, and another bit of evidence of man kind destroying their own!
alicia348 (25 months ago )
Don't be ignorant. Detroit has had it's issues, yes, that's undeniable, but everyone loves to hate it. I don't understand why. I live here, I'm white. I love it more than anything and plan to live here for the next 10 years or so. Chicago and New York have their fair share of issues too, they're just not broadcasted for the world to see. If you don't like it, fine, you don't have to, but at least be informed..
Spaz_Girl76 (25 months ago )
@Axemancda - The people never left Hiroshima or Nagasaki. Many people that were there when the bombs went off got sick and died from radiation (or people that went there within a few weeks of that time), but for the most part, it was a relatively quick blast of radiation, not a constant or long term leaking of radiation. Most radioactive materials have a very short half life

Detroit is not uninhabitable due to nuclear radiation. If you really can't see the difference then you should thank God for the wonderful life you have.
These pictures are amazing. They are also very haunting. The "townpeople" left by the artists would freak me out.

@Crabby Golightly - those pics are some of the saddest I've ever seen. Someone else mentioned the animal population in the city; were they affected in the same way? And why is everyone picking on Detroit? I've only been a handful of times, but enjoyed myself. I live in Cleveland, which is on a downslide, too, but I still love it here. Does make me very nervous though that we have 2 reactors on the lake, another down near Cinci (I think), and if rumors are correct, another one to be built somewhere between Columbus and Cleveland. Kinda scary after looking at all these pics.

I feel at some point they will be the cause of our end!

To debbiesylvester: I commend you on commenting as an adult. I am from Detroit, went to all public schools in Detroit and graduated from two Universities (one inside of Detroit). As a suma cume laude graduate and an 1811 High ranking LEO, I would like to say that ignorance is bliss to most people. There are many ignorant comments on this page. Mostly from people that were PROBABLY hit by the economic crisis and never thought they would be. The article wasn't about "Chernobyl vs. Detroit" and yet people still choose to bash Detroit. But Detroit is tough and Detroit won't go away. The idiots on this page that talk trash about Detroit won't step a foot in Detroit NOR can walk down its streets at night like I can and do. We are building, we are gaining momentum and we will leave you behind in the dust. It's Big Corporations that left Detroit in the past. What makes you think you are in any greater of a position? You are simple-minded and know nothing about Business and true corruption as it is spreading across the USA like a virus. The only thing that will keep our USA together is unity and a cooperative effort to "keep hope alive". To those of you that are constantly bashing Detroit (even when it's not the topic of the article), meet me here in Detroit so we can talk face to face and not hide behind the net. God Bless Detroit!

I'm pretty sure that people who came here to read this article don't give a flying monkey's ass about Detroit. If you want to argue about that, then go somewhere else. I'd have to agree with what some of the others are saying, you have a home to live in, you haven't been forced from your town because of a nuclear disaster, and there are WAY worse poverty stricken places in the world than anywhere in the U.S. I was 3 when this horrendous incident occured, but I was still taught about it and the wake it left. I truly hope something like this never happens again.

The fission reaction in the Chernobyl reactor was moderated by graphite, which was a bad idea because graphite burns when it gets hot enough.
The Fukushima reactor used water instead of graphite--doesn't burn, although they did get explosions from accumulating hydrogen gas.
I don't think Fukushima will be as great a disaster as Chernobyl because they don't have to deal with the burning graphite--less radioactive material will escape, and the affected area will be smaller.
And for the record, FBI statistics for the first half of 2010 show an annualized murder rate in Detroit of 32 per 100,000 population. That's on par with Baltimore and Newark (31 and 27), less than St. Louis at 35, and almost two times better than New Orleans at 62.

the real tragedy is that the loss of life, environmental damage and suffering caused by nuclear accidents in Chernobyl, 3 mile Island, Northern Japan and others did not have to happen. Greed and power will destroy all humanity in the end because most people are cowards and the folks that run the world only care about increasing the bottom line with no though to the harm caused to human life and our environment. These disasters should never happen because we have workable alternatives to petroleum and nuclear power that can easily be put on line if the will to do so was there. Instead lies are told about the difficulty and the cost of making the change to safer and more efficient power alternatives. If we must use nuclear power, then thorium is SAFER, LESS EXPENSIVE, AND SIMPLER FORM OF ENERGY GENERATION than uranium reactors. The only reason THORIUM was abandoned in favor of uranium is - YOU CANNOT MAKE NUCLEAR BOMBS. In my earlier Pollyanna day i used to believe that one day good will triumph over greed and evil but I know now that I am surely mistaken in that belief. Nothing will change, the power broker will continue to destroy lives and to destroy our world until one day the world is too polluted to sustain life or we blow it all to bits. There is no hope for humanity whatsoever! Zero, none, nada!

First to everyone complaining about Detroit and foriegn car companies.... More "Foreign" cars are built with more American parts and by American workers than most "American" cars. Its a fact... a sad fact.... made even worse by the fact that American car companies have been able to convince us otherwise.... only because most of us dont research it. Second... couldnt agree more with the people that are saying that this article wasnt about that to begin with. It was a terrible incident and frankly was and continues to be a crime against humanity. The effects from their negligence will last for generations. I work wth radiation and am well read in the subject. Will spare the lecture but check out some videos on youtube if interested. oh, I forgot to add this. the last time I went to Detriot, the houses were boarded up, graffiti and bullet holes covered the landscape, homeless men and women were huddle in masses around every alley. RWhetstone1979 (25 months ago )
To mRuss22: Regardless if foreign car companies build their cars here or not you have to realize that all of the profit still goes to Japan, Korea, Germany, etc. By building their cars here they can say "Hey we build our cars in the U.S. so it's good for your economy." When in fact that is total bullshit. Sure it creates U.S. jobs, but it does nothing more. I refuse to support foreign economies with my hard earned dollar, and if you do then you are a bigger fool than I.

It is eerie to see the city standing with no people around. From a distance, it does not look that bad...just empty. The slow decay that is our construction slowly slipping back into where it was before us.
Eventually the mess will be contained permanently, though it may not matter. The people have moved on with life and this can be left to stand as a stark reminder that nuclear power requires vigilance at all levels, from design to operation.

I am proud to live in Detroit. Yep, we have a whole lotta crime, a whole lotta crooked politicians, problems at our schools, our new Governor is raping our education system, yep...whole lotta problems. However, the 2009 list of most crime-ridden cities - the most recent avaialble - Detroit doesn't even make the top 20. We haven't held that distinction since the late 70's. Amazing how reputations can sully things, even when they are no longer true. It's because ignorant haters pass off false information as accurate and other idiots blindly believe it without checking their sources. You know what Detroit has? We have passion, art, incredible hospitals and universities, top notch sporting teams (OK, so the Lions still pretty much suck...), first class dining, an amazing history, a ton of heart and resilience. We've been beaten down by the corporations and politicians that beat down every city. We got more than our share of crooks over the years, but we are on the move back up, and progress is happening here. I'm a little "white girl" who grew up in the burbs of Detroit, true. But I spent 80% of my time and money in Detroit. I grew up knowing which neighborhoods were actually dangerous, and which ones were simply poor. You don't have to be afraid of poor, kwim? You don't have to be afraid of black, either. You really only need to fear stupidity and lack of common sense. I am going to be 43, and I have been hanging in the D since 1984, when I got my drivers license. I have never been robbed, attacked, harmed, had my car broken into, etc. I've hung out at places that weren't the places listed on a Detroit travel brochure. I didn't live in a suburban bubble where I went to Red Wings games and considered myself a "Detroiter". I have worked the soil in Detroit. I have constructed libraries and playgrounds there. I have gotten my hands dirty trying to make it better. I don't throw a check at a charity and call it done. I go. I solicit help and money and materials. I go and use the tools myself to get things done. I don't sit and bitch about what needs to be done or tear it down verbally... I do it. My husband works on the River, our friends live there, we entertain and socialize downtown, we pay taxes there.
Honestly, shut the hell up if you don't live here and have nothing positive to say. Go fix your own damn city and leave ours alone. It's far too cool for you. Trust me. We don't want you here anyhow.
I can tell you another thing Detroit has a lot of... people from Chernobyl and Pripyet. I have had several neighbors who were forced out of their homes with nothing, literally nothing, and they sought shelter HERE, in Detroit. Because we have a huge Russian population, a huge Jewish population, and they had the help they needed from their Detroit community.
Why not get your internet-addicted, wrong-opinioned, spewing, sorry ass off the chair you are in and DO something besides running your mouth about things you know nothing about? Idiots.

Why is it that when there is a disaster there is people that want to "fight" and act childish by putting other's comments down? This is stupid.. people need to grow up. Getting angry just because someone decides to compair this area to Detroit? REALLY?! People died in this and the only thing certain people care about is what it looks like. Instead of arguing over stupid things why not take the time to think of all the families that lost loved ones and hope and pray that this never happens to you? I have to agree with msbunglexx....

It had everything to do with NAFTA. That is one bill they should had wiped their ass with, and then proceeded to burn.
