Pink dolphins are a rare breed of
freshwater dolphins that make their home
in the Amazon River. Beautiful as well
as smart (their brains are 40 percent bigger than
a human's), they are the largest of the four
known species of river dolphins.
Unfortunately, they are also endangered due to pollution, overfishing, and destruction of their natural habitat. According to National Geographic, approximately 100,000 of them remain.

Someone from China has a lot of damn nerve posting a picture of a dolphin. Asia kills more whales and dolphins every year than the entire world does. It's pathetic.
thoaluong (38 months ago )
Despite the fact that there is a lot of controversy in that area with whales/dolphins, it does not necessarily mean everyone in that country supports it. For someone who thinks that one particular person from China "has a lot of damn nerve posting a picture of a dolphin," that generalization takes some nerve as well. Or perhaps it's not really nerve, but rather ignorance.
subearanhuman (38 months ago )
I agree with you thoaluong. That would be like saying, "Americans have a lot of damn nerve posting pictures of forests."
Plus, it's Japan more so than China, that kills more cetaceans than anywhere else in the world.

I was on a tributary to a tributary of the Amazon - about 1000 miles east of Manaus (sp?) and north of the Amazon. I saw a school of pink dolphins in a lake and the guide mentioned that these particular ones were fresh-water pink dolphins.

Don't be so hard on mystify1 - she has a point. Many countries continue to kill large numbers of dolphin and whale, despite the fact that these animals are highly intelligent, and in some cases, protected by laws which are blatantly ignored. . You may want to check out The movie "The Cove" about the slaughter of Japans Dolphins in Taiji, Japan. It won an academy award.

Spectacular, I saw some in Bolivia in the Mamore, but they just swan alongside the boat, not coming up to us swimmers to say hi. Either way, it was a humbling experience. :)

He who cast no stones (37 months ago )
To Mystify1 you know not everyone in China agrees with the fact that some in their Country kills wales and dolphins. So before you pass judgment and cast stones take a look in your own back yard first. I am an American. I know we aren't perfect people as well. Do we condone rapist, murderers and pedophiles no we don't. We also have some admits us who exploit animals and nature reserves. You obviously hate those who exploit wales. Well let me tell you our own government is a user of whale oil. Nasa uses wale oil to operate the Hubble telescope. Yes the Hubble runs on whale oil. So if you really want to protest in a positive way don't blame the whole country of China for the wrongs of a select few among them. Start here in your own Country and state your concerns to your Congress man in your area to speak in your behave to Congress to Stop the use of whale oil in the USA. Explain to him in this manor. Drugs or illegal so if we are in possession of illegal drugs we are committing a crime and prosecuted. So what gives Nasa immunity to use whale oil when it's illegal to hunt and kill wales. That is where you need to start your fight. If your not an American take it to your government officials. Have a nice day.

@Mystify1: there's a place in ireland (yeah, i think it's ireland...) where a lot of people (teens mostly, to show their manhood) kill a whole lot of dolphins at a certain time of year. that species of dolphin is already an endangered species thanks to them and they still go near the humans because they want to play. they cut them a few times with really big hooks and let them bleed to death. then they cut 'em open and yank all the guts out. i don't know what they do with them after that....
Eostra (37 months ago )
@sdavidson86: It's not a place in Ireland, it's on Faroe Islands that belong to Denmark. And think those are whales they kill not dolphins but still it's terrible :(

I hope many of the people commenting here realize that in our own country -- in Alaska -- we still allow whaling. The natives have quotas on how many they may kill, but whaling is still allowed even in the US.
And I think the real point is that just because you are from a country (for example, Japan) that allows whaling does not mean you support the practice. That is as absurd as saying you automatically support Obama just because you are living in the US. That's just faulty logic.

Amazon pink dolphns are also known as botou dolphins, in case anyone wishes to know. Also that third photo features bottlenose dolphins, not the Amazon ones.
Very nice photos all together. I love these dolphins.
juggalojosh (34 months ago )
why does china and japan kill these cool things man i bet if they had legs and arms and a body they would fight back or ude never know the dolphins might be makeing a aswem gun to kill who hurt them
Roukolla (34 months ago )
As far USA is concerned, it is not only about forests, it is about too many wars started on this Planet Earth...in the name of "Freedom", "Peace" and "Security"..think people...point a spot on the Globe and you will see...
These dolphins are lovely, let us celebrate them.
Animals are killed...but too many people too.
If we should dare to think at a better World, we should start to learn to love and protect each soul...animal or human beeing!

I really wanted to go on the dolphin boat when we were in Hong Kong but it was really windy that day and the boat was small. We decided that we wanted to watch the dolphins some day when we weren't going to end up swimming with them. Know what I mean?
