post on flickr has nothing to do with challenging high technology. having an undocumented, unpublished, memory is challenging high technology. sorry to be a party pooper.

the only way to challenge technology is by not using any? i think not, andrew tuft.

we can get more creative than that!

The YACHT Trust says:

Andrew Tuft, Thunderoni,

Thank you for participating.

Although we appreciate your points about technological vs. non-technological forms of expression, we’d like to clear up some perceived misunderstandings. Incidentally, YACHT does not consider you to be a “party pooper”, so there is no need to apologize, however, if you insist, we accept your apology.

It seems to us that you are mistaking the title of this image as belonging to the act of posting this image on Flickr. The title and the image are both referencing the same thing: YACHT. YACHT is a borrowed acronym meaning “Young Americans Challenging High Technology.” In this photograph we are identifying ourselves as YACHT by using this acronym. It is the title of the photograph as well as the implicit name of the group; it is not, in this situation, a statement of intent. We do not propose that this image challenges high technology in any capacity.

While we’re discussing this, however, we might as well address the issue at hand. Are we correct to assume that a reactionary viewpoint regarding the Internet is this issue? There is no need to feel threatened by the Internet; online documentation is not going to somehow rob your ephemeral personal experiences from you. The square inches of feeling inside of your skull are yours, and yours alone, but they are not mutually exclusive with an openly manifested use of the valuable tool that is the Internet, or “high technology.”

The term “high technology” may seem a little awkward, but many people are accustomed to its hyphenated form: high-tech. High technology, or high-tech, is a term we use to talk about the cutting edge of new technology. High-tech is an ever shifting focus as the technology that was once the most advanced becomes more wide-spread and popular and new, and even more powerful technologies (both software and hardware) are created.

When this phrase was coined in the late 1950’s high-technology was something that experts and scientists built (atomic energy for example). It was a mystery to the common man/woman and had little real world effect on his/her life. Fast forward fifty years and high-technology is something we all hold in our hands; it has become less of an object and more of a mindset. High-tech is now the constant state of re-education that is our relationship to all technology. We are all high-tech unless we decide to drop out.

What could be more high-tech than capturing an image on film in the desert, processing it and digitizing it, editing it 2000 miles away, posting it online for the world to see, and then having a near-realtime discussion on the merits of what is and what is not “high-tech”?

This is a subject we enjoy discussing very much. If you’re interested in pursuing it further you can email us directly at trust@teamyacht.com.

Remain In Light,
The YACHT Trust
