Walkman Analog Delay Top

Walkman Analog Delay Top by xelent.
V2 of my Tape Delay Machine uses two walkman type tape players. One is a Realistic Stereo Mate and the other is a Memorex XB.

Both players have a similar footprint, so I arranged them side by side and connected them together.

A single tape loop runs through two modified cassettes (each which have had one of their left or right sides removed).

The players themselves have had there walls (the two in the center, respectively) filed down, so the tape runs fluently.

The Realistic Stereo Mate has recording capability, where as the memorex does not.

This is purposeful, because the tape (which moves counter-clockwise) travels through the left player (Realistic) where it's internal microphone records sound, and then travels to the Memorex which plays back the sound about 3 seconds later.

Brilliantly ghetto.

I'd love to see the obvious extension of this: additional tape pairs with different tape loop lengths for "adjustable" delay. Swap the tapes, slide the players apart to to tension the tape, and away you go. :)

Or, use a longer tape loop with a tensioner that will let you slide them an arbitrary distance apart. That may be too much complexity for this kind of project though.

I like bartoncasey's suggestion - you could do it with a sliding rod and some pulleys like this, as long as you don't try to change the length too fast!

Better would be to modify the tape decks to run faster/slower. Not hard at all, really. Running the tape faster will also yield better fidelity, which is why all good 4-track recorders can run at double speed.

Amazing idea! I have to try this!

Do both walkmans advance the tape, or just one? Would it be possible with just one?

I'm thinking of trying this with a variable speed walkman, but that would only work if the motor on the second, non-variable speed walkman was disconnected.
