Wood and aquatec paint on canvas
Circa 1973-1975

Artist Biography
Jerry T. Okimoto (1924 – 1998) was a Japanese-American painter and sculptor who was born in Waianae, Hawaii. He is best known for his minimalist paintings and wood sculptures. During the 1950s in New York, he was a member a group of seven Asian-American artists with ties to Honolulu called Metcalf Chateau. Additional members included Satoru Abe, Bumpei Akaji, Edmund Chung, Tetsuo Ochikubo, James Park, and Tadashi Sato.

The artists arrived in New York at the height of the post World War II Abstract Expressionism movement, and, new to the world of fine art, absorbed everything around them. While the other members of the group eventually returned to Hawaii, Okimoto made New York his home until his death in 1998.

His work is in many private and public collections including the Chrysler Museum, the Cleveland Museum of Art, The Hawaii State Art Museum, the Honolulu Academy of Arts, the Hirshhorn Museum, the Michelson Museum of Art, the University of Michigan Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
