Heron (HDR)

Heron (HDR) by 0 W8ing.
I had replaced the original version of this not-so-sharp heron photo, once, already, which I still wasn't happy with. This time I used the free version of Photomatix HDR tonemapping software to open up the backlit bird and hold details in the glowing feathers and foliage.

Second version, replacing the first, neither of which was made using HDR techniques.. Nor effective selective sharpening.

Nice work! Very natural.

Gotta love the light on the huge wings of the heron.

Ya did good! You've brightened both the bird and the background and yet made the bird stand out.

Thanks, each'n.
Thanks, AJ.. master of HDR, yourself.
Massimo, I split the one RAW file, using Adobe Camera Raw, into two tiffs.
Al, i Love your "EyeCon".. it looked like a mean human eye, 'til it clicked in as a fish head...NICE.

Aside from your gorgeous captures, your tutorials are so engaging to me (who knows nothing about the technology). I salute your generosity of spirit!

Great use of backlighting, Wayne. It gives the picture real depth. The details on the spread wings, tail feathers and legss are terrific.

Jonathan, we've had a couple of photoshop meetups... first one I got to was large and we sort of free-for-all'ed it.. the second one was smaller, and some hints and tips and basic tweaks got passed along. When critical mass builds for another, we should have one. If you want to Seed one.. I'm good for it.
If we can find access to a big screen, or a projector, we can hook into, we can do quite a bit. We thought we had that, last time, but it failed to work properly.
I've created a couple of tutorials, here: www.flickr.com/photos/wwwayneup/collections/7 215760007501...
I've added a tutorial on my currently preferred final sharpening technique
