At first I left the lpt casing on.

Looks like crap right... I ran out of small guage heatshrink and had to use some really bad electrical tape.

Always put the heatshrink on before you wire.

The outer rubber coat on the lpt cable is not very giving, so for later rewiring I stripped it off.
