Rossing Uranium Mine lies about 70km inland from Swakopmund close to the small town of Arandis. It was founded by amateur geologist Capt. Peter Louw in 1928 largley owned by the Rio Tinto Group (69% shares). In 2006 the mine produced about 7% of the world production of primary produced uranium.
