1950 -- Bungelow Cafe Interior -- Junction City, Oregon

From 4x5 B&W Kodak negative taken by F.R. Schultz in 1950; scanned and post-processed by me.

This interior shot complements the exterior view. It was likely taken around 3:40 p.m. on a dark, rainy afternoon, and it captures the moment when students started arriving after school. Enlarging the image reveals intriguing details. Notice the young man with a 'J' on his arm, wearing his letterman's sweater, indicating he was a member of one or more high school athletic teams. Not everyone approved of this social spot, which featured pinball machines and served beer (though reportedly not to students), enhancing the establishment's slightly louche aura. The stuffed animals were prizes for a game of chance, where players inserted a key or stylus into a punchboard, twisted it, and received a paper spiral with a number. Winning numbers received the prizes.
