Afganistan. Very rare. Lapis Lazuli crystal on matrix (marble, a little pyrite, some calcite). The front crystal face is ~2.5 x 2.5cm. This is the best-formed Lapis crystal I've seen. There is evidence that the area this came from in Northern Afganistan has been mined for Lapis for about 7000 years--it's the oldest known mining site in the world. Lapis is a rock, and I don't think that rocks form crystals, but Lazuli is a mineral and it did a heck of a job turning this one into a Lapis Lazuli crystal.
