Navajo-Nation
Die Navajo-Nation (auch Navajo Indian Reservation) ist mit 55.900 km² die größte Indianerreservation in den USA. Sie wurde den Diné-Indianern 1868 durch General Sherman vertraglich zugesichert. Die Hauptstadt ist Window Rock, Arizona.
Lage
Die Navajo-Nation liegt in den Four Corners der Sandsteinwüste zwischen Utah, Arizona und New Mexico. Sie ist Teil des Colorado-Plateaus auf einer Höhe von 1.500 bis 2.000 m ü. d. Meeresspiegel Nebst verschiedenen Canyons und großen Flusssystemen ist das Land für seine Tafelberge (span. Mesa) und für weitere Sehenswürdigkeiten wie das Monument Valley, den Canyon de Chelly und den Antelope Canyon bekannt.
Eingeschlossen in die Navajo Nation Reservation ist die Hopi-Reservation.
Lebensituation
Die Navajos haben eine eigene Regierung, die frei gewählt wird, sowie eine eigene Polizei. Die Kinder besuchen Schulen außerhalb des Reservates und kehren erst spät am Nachmittag von dort zurück. Die traditionelle Wohnform sind Hogans, ein Rundbau aus Holz und Steinen, die teilweise in die Erde gebaut werden und weit über das Land verstreut sind. Die Armut in der Reservation gleicht derjenigen in einem Land der Dritten Welt. Über die Hälfte der rund 269.000 Einwohnern (Census 2000) lebt unterhalb der Armutsgrenze. Das durchschnittliche Jahreseinkommen liegt bei knapp 11.885 US-Dollar pro Kopf, rund ein Drittel von dem der übrigen USA. Die Arbeitslosenrate beträgt rund 40%.
Alkohol- und Drogenabhängigkeit sind ein großes Problem, vor allem unter Jugendlichen.
Viele Diné betreiben Schaf- Rinder- oder Pferdezucht. Weitere Verdienstmöglichkeiten bestehen lediglich in der Herstellung und im Verkauf von Kunsthandwerken, Decken, Silber- und Türkisschmuck, im Tourismus und im Bergbau. Junge Leute mit gutem Schulabschluss verlassen die Reservation um zu studieren und werden als Experten, vor allem im Bauwesen, sowohl in den USA als auch im Ausland sehr geschätzt. Sie unterstützen dann ihre oft sehr großen Familien in der Reservation.
