Taken at the Santa Barbara Pier, where the pelicans beg like pigeons.

Beauty in Decay by Twitchietai

Beauty in Decay

Decomposition refers to the process by which tissues of dead organisms break down into simpler forms of matter. Such a breakdown of dead organisms is essential for new growth and development of living organisms because it recycles the finite chemical constituents and frees up the limited physical space in the biome. Bodies of living organisms begin to decompose shortly after death... Wikipedia

Come Sit by the Hearth by Twitchietai

Come Sit by the Hearth

Detail of the indoor kitchen, Avila Adobe at El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument. Constructed on Olvera St around 1818 it is the oldest surviving home in Los Angeles and appears today the way it might have looked in the late 1840's.

Olvera St is one of the oldest streets in the City of Los Angeles, and was originally a short lane called Wine (or possibly Vine) Street. It was renamed in 1877 in honor of the area's first County Judge, Agustin Olvera. The area prospered as immigrants flooded the neighborhood around the Old Plaza.

Sumkinda Tree by Twitchietai

Sumkinda Tree

That's what this is-- some kind of tree. Well, it's the foliage of some kind of tree. It lives at the Los Angeles Zoo and it's quite pretty. It's a small tree, only about 6 or 7 feet tall, and the flowers you see hanging down look like they belong on a Euphorbia plant. But it's not a Euphorbia, it's some kind of tree. If you know exactly what kind of tree this is, please tell me, and I will be most appreciative!

Well, mystery solved. It is indeed a tree of the Euphorbia family.

(Please, no large and/or glittery graphics. Thanks)

Watchful Lizard by Twitchietai

Watchful Lizard

A Western Fence Lizard on.. a fence!
The Western Fence Lizard (Sceloporus occidentalis) is the most common lizard in my area. They are also sometimes called the "Blue Belly Lizard" and you can see why.
The males perform "push-ups" when approached to appear bigger.
