Your friends like a certain you, that's who you've got to be

Your friends like a certain you, that's who you've got to be by wiseacre photo.
Working on a new series that examines the cultural (and specifically the mainstream advertising and marketing) messages that define what it means to be "sexy". How it affects your view of yourself against those things we see; how it affects our relationships or marriages.

This is just a piece of the final that will be a 2 sided flip cover of a woman and a man, examining themselves in the mirror. This is when we're most vulnerable -- looking in the mirror, before we sleep; and there will be rip-collage of magazine ads that show us is "beautiful", formed in a thought bubble over their heads.

@u.linder: Nope, no HDR. I use Shadow/Highlight on this to get a maximum range of detail (for this shot), I wanted details, textures, to be explicit and well defined.

Great Idea. Love the effect. Can't tell you how many times I've done this. ;-)

Do you think that mainstream advertising effects married couples?
I think the "major" effect would be on the younger (teenage) group where they are trying to define themselves in society. hmm... I never really thought about it effecting couples. Interesting. Something to think about.

Amazing detail here. I wish I knew how you use that Shadow/Highlight tool, as I certainly don't get it. Great photo.

awesome topic to cover, paul...it really is tragic the expectations that society creates for us, and young girls take the hardest hit. it's a wonder that any of them survive to adulthood with normal body images or realistic views of what is beautiful. great job.

can't wait to see the shot of the guy in the mirror.

@ Mudcat, i think it does affect marriages. It at least affected mine for a long while, I brought all of those insecurities with how I looked into my marriage with me, Was I sexy, pretty, thin enough? etc etc.
And I'd lived convinced that i was none of those things for so long that no matter what my husband told me to big me up didn't work I'd convinced myself (with the help of all those magazines i was reading, and all the other media junk) of the opposite. Yes, it affected our marriage, it frustrated him that nothing he said could change my mind...

etc.

@notcatherinezeta: amen. sonya was/is exactly the same way. and it is frustrating -- as a couple we're supposed to encourage one another, but it's difficult when that encouragement is essentially spit out. it sometimes felt/feels useless. "I wish I had bigger boobs", "I wish I were taller", "I wish my skin were less wrinkled", all these things that infect our subconscious, eating away at real beauty and substituting artificiality.

As someone who can do quite a bit with Photoshop, I know that 85% of what we see is faked. Produced. Specifically intended to meet an unrealistic ideal -- one that is said to "appeal" to the consumer. Rather it seems to feed the machine of self-loathing.
