WIPO Director-General Francis Gurry speaks at the opening ceremony of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum, held Monday, May 13, 2013 in Geneva, Switzerland. Mr. Gurry said the Internet, and information and communication technologies (ICTs) in particular, have created many opportunities and challenges for the information society. One of the challenges is how to transform the architecture of the intellectual property system to support the migration from an analogue to a digital world.
He also noted that the underlying objective of a balanced and effective international IP system is promoting innovation and creativity for the economic, social and cultural development of all countries. The WSIS Forum is largely considered as the world’s largest annual gathering of the ‘ICT for development’ community.
