and so it begins ...

and so it begins ... by WilWheaton.
I'm about to start a D&D 4E campaign for my son and some of his friends. This is the set up I have.

I'm starting them out with the first Dungeon Delve (which I've placed a morning's journey outside of Fallcrest), but instead of setting it in an excavation, I'm putting the dungeon down in the ruins of an old Dwarven tower, so I can use this set of dungeon tiles that I really like.

Once they make it through the delve, they'll be encouraged to head up Kings Road to Winterhaven, where strange things are afoot...

Wil, I'm so glad to read and see about you running this game for your son. And it sounds like you're having a great time with it as well.

I remember the old DM screen... it seemed about 20 feet tall... the DM was behind this impenetrable wall with a giant red dragon on it... holding you over some flaming abyss by a spider's thread... muhahaha..*cough* *ahem* :D

I can't help but see that old Chick track about the dangers of D&D when I see the screen. It always gave me a giggle:

I'd drive to California for an evening of D&D with you. It must be amazing to have a professional actor as a Dungeon Master!

Good going -- get those kids off that Xbox! :-) I play with a bunch of other folks who work in videogames, and we really enjoy getting back to basics and rolling dice. My teenaged son and his friends prefer anime-themed RPGs, though -- dungeon delving is too old school for them!

Nice screen! The one I use is small and pathetic, I have to crouch behind it and keep my miniatures in a box beside me. Would love this set up! Happy Questing!

Wil - at what age did you start teaching your son? Mine's 9 and I am just starting him out on 4ed.

Loved the podcast of the d&d game on the wizards website. :)

I was never one for D&D, it has too much rules.

Focus on ROLE PLAY not slice n' dice, and you will have yourself an experience of a lifetime. Go for Warhammer. It has the "Tolkien" generic universe with a set of loose rules which makes for many creative interpretations. Just my 2c.
D&D is cool, but it has little to do with role playing. It is Monopoly Advanced. Remember that role playing doesn't need a rule book.

Aside from that, your gear looks absolutely adequate, from one nerd to another:)

I don't think my brain can understand 4th ed rules! That d20 thing never thrilled me. I am a sucker for D&D circa 1979-88... AARGH the memories!

Peace,
Tony
