Not only are they copying your ideas, but they're also tacking them into a string of wacky art bullshit that trivializes it all. Boo!

Dirty rotten I say. Thanks for the links, I read all that bullshit @ the "priss" link too. I was astounded to see so many apologists for Schofield, but nice to see some sticking up for you too.
This one is fascinating:
"The explanation seems pretty reasonable: Keith saw the photo somewhere online, thought it was just a goofy internet meme, and put it in the video to be funny. I mean, look at the other pictures he used, spongebob being arrested, fat kid with guitar, etc- it's just a big found photo collage."
"reasonable"? Keith just dances around mindlessly stealing other people's "goofy" shit off the internet, then just sorta innocently makes little photo collage videos like a fourteen year old scrapbooker?
Sorry to rant...delete it if ya want, but this is all so mindblowing.
Hope somethin' comes of this in your favor William, 'cause I know how this kinda stuff can really feel like shit.

wow... i just looked at that thread again. seems to me some people have a really sophomore understanding of appropriation. i appreciate the role of appropriation, collage, pastiche, etc in art... but james joyce appropriating homer is quite a different thing than this music video director recreating the work of an emerging photographer. for appropriation to function properly, the audience has to be in on the joke... the problem here is that most people won't look at this video and think "oh he's paying homage to hundley et al." this video is aimed at an indie music audience, most of whom probably aren't familiar with hundley's work. if famous cindy sherman photos were being recreated, it might function more properly as an appropriation... i don't know, i feel there is a definite line between stealing and appropriation, and you can't throw just whatever you want under the umbrella of "appropriation."

Jennifer is spot on, my thoughts exactly

If you think you're pissed off, imagine what Newton's going through. He's getting ripped of by thousands of mathematicians every day, and that's been going on for centuries. CENTURIES, MAN! Boycott mathematics!

they have violated copyright without dignity, they think they're great
artist, but they're just poor thiefs without ideas
Lasirenita (42 months ago | reply)
Ow come on. You should be flattered.
No one but your friends would even know who you are if it's not for the video.
You wanted views on your crappy flickr? You got em. Thanks to the video (and your wisely applied tags).
You wanted to be more than a authorless wtf pic? Now you are, thanks to the video.
Stop victimizing yourself and be thankful that you are now considered an important part of the internet culture.
Kate Tomlinson (42 months ago | reply)
oooooh i think lasirenita is jealous no one stole her non existent photos to use in their music video.
wimdejonge (42 months ago | reply)
Being an important part of the internet culture doesn't pay the bills, Lasirenita. I love the idea of "information wants to be free" just as much as the next guy, but we're talking about an idealistic notion in a realistic (financial) world. What kind of perverted logic dictates that you need to be ripped off by a high profile person first to become high profile yourself? This logic serves to create a divide between the haves and have-nots, and not because of what they are capable of, but because of how well they can copy. It's a guarantee for more uniform bulk/commercial work, and less diversity and quality work. Perfectly fitting for this McDonalds & Starbucks world, but really bad for art.
There's good points on both sides here, but I think the balance should lean towards the little guy (William Hundley) simply because copyright was designed for that... yet, since it got converted into a tool to iron-clad the position of the bigger guys, people tend to use a perverted kind of logic that seems to say "hey it's your fault that you're the little guy". It's not. William Hundley is the one with the rare ideas here, so he should at least get some recognition.

And the most puzzling thing is, the appropriated shots have no fundamental reason to even be in the piece whatsoever.

Here's another ripoff from the video.
At the 1:43 mark, there's an astronaut with pancakes for a head.
So I went to google images, and typed in: pancakes for a head
and after about 3 pages, I found this image:

from this page:
www.disqueprimeur.com/tag/nerd/
This photo was uploaded June 15th 2009, and according to wikipedia, the video for 'Heaven Can Wait;' was released Nov 19th 2009, plenty of time to rip off this photo too!

Who is this director Keith Schofield ripping off ideas and passing them off like it's his own.
om.au (42 months ago | reply)
I saw Keith Schofield speak recently at the Semi-Permanent deesign conference in Melbourne where I got a sneak peak at his director's cut of this clip (before it was released). All the images he used are from ffffound, there is no deliberate ripping people off here.
However, it seems that, by coincidence, there are 2 or more (?) references to Will Hundley's work and that, in my opinion, deserves some recognition.
@albino_octopus / Will Hundley — the negative comments here are dragging you down dude!
Write to Schofiield and request recognition. He seems like a nice guy, ask him to get Beck and Charlotte to attend a gallery opening of your works! Your work rocks, use the publicity to YOUR advantage!
... and tell your "friends" here to stop giving you a reputation as a whiner and a "priss".
newplasticmachine (42 months ago | reply)
om.au: you joined flickr just to say that?
nightphotog (42 months ago | reply)
@wimdejonge: Here, here!
@om.au - All of the images on fffound are "ripped off" in that they are others' work being curated there. If he found the ideas there, they are no more his than if he found them from people's direct websites! Do you know what fffound is?!

I'm a little perturbed that proper credit hasn't been given to the skateboard manufacturer, or the inventor of the cheeseburger...
WinnipegC (42 months ago | reply)
whoever, whomever: you're being sarcastic, right?
Cheeseburger by itself, not art.
Skateboard by itself, well, it could be art.
Skateboard on four cheeseburgers = art.
The beauty of it is that you can come up with your own interpretation of what the image means.
Being vegan, I have my own personal spin on what the photo means to me. And crushing cheeseburgers with a skateboard visually matches my sentiment, so yeah, I like the photo.
And kudos to Keith Schofield for doing the right thing. Every photographer whose idea was borrowed for the music video should be credited. Cheers!

it's the same as sampling and that has been done by musicians for a long time. it's cool that someone thought your shit was good enough for the vid.

it has nothing to do with "sampling", as in sampling you're taking pieces from another recording, not the whole 'thing'
