Paris, samedi 12 avril 2008.

Paris, Saturday April 12th 2008.

Protest in front of the ministry of Health, organized by the national collective against excess charges and for health care access for all.

Saturday April 12th, the sick were invited to bring their empty boxes of medicines in front of the ministry of Health in Paris, in protestation against the establishment since January 1st 2008 of an excess charge when buying each of those. These excess charges — which concern paramedical acts and sanitary travels too — touch every user of the health system ; except pregnant women, children and those covered by the State universal health coverage (CMU). So most chronically sick are concerned, with those under long term affection [a French health status that, theoricaly, grants 100% health insurance], and including those in the most precarious situations: like, for example, those having the disabled adult allocation which grants them a mere 628,10€ per month ; and more generally those living just above the CMU threshold (600€).

Here, giant fake boxes of antiretroviral medicines made by Act Up-Paris with an evocative name : SARKOVIR 200mg from Bachelotpharm laboratory (Sarkozy if the French president and Bachelot is the minister of Health). You can also see the official placard of the collective against excess charges that states : "Medical excess charges / GUILTY TO BE SICK". All this, in front of a well guarded ministry.

Wow, I hadn't heard about this. Thanks for spreading the word (image).
Act Up has been pretty quiet in the states for a while.

As bad as this sounds it still does not compare to the horrible health care system that we have here in the states. One tooth filling without insurance is $500 and above, but mostly $1000 or more. You can figure out the rest.

Hehe ;)

: We actually know how bad it is, for now our health system is quite different and hardly arguably better, we know that (as far as equality goes). However there is a clear way of thinking in France (the one at power) that try to spread the idea that our system is broken and we should go in the same direction than the States like systems, that is: a much more important individual participation to health costs, a more prominent private share in the system and the end of real mutulalization of the costs (i.e. the end of solidarity). But why, you'd ask ? Because there is big money to do. For now we spend around 10% of our PIB for health ; States are in the 16% ; they want to rise the costs here, they know the current system can't afford that, and they want their mates in the private sector to eat the whole cake. Be sure WE DON'T WANT this shit to happen here, and won't wait for the situation to get worse.

Thanks for adding me :) YOu have an amazing body of journalistic work here, and it's all stunningly beautiful. Am in admiration.

Australia's health system is crumbling and in dreadful repair. What has made it worse is our government caved to pressure with the USA in FTA (free trade agreements) but the public pay for it in increased costs of medicines and many Australian pharmaceutical companies have had to stop making/selling cheaper medicines here due to USA pressue.

We hear so little of France, interesting to know things are not good anywhere

Sorry if my French has become too bad to be understandable. It's been centuries since the last time I used French. Your journalism photos are really good, but I found that you also had many photos with high saturation here. Are those on-the-newspaper photos too?
