Stage One: A Place In The Sun For Buster |
I've cared for a fugitive Russian
tortoise since it was found in October
of 2001. For these seven years its lived
in progressively larger aquariums, which
are decidedly not ideal for tortoises.
Well, I finally made good on long
put-off plans to build Buster an outdoor
home and this pretty much details the
work done this morning.
What remains before Buster is
introduced to her new digs is to fill
the box a third to half-way with dirt
and construct an adequate and secure
roof (pretty much consisting of a
custom-made screen hinged on one side
and latched on the other.
For any who wonder why I just don't put
Buster in the backyard and let her have
that as her pen, Russians are
notoriously renowned and indefatigable
escape artists, and there are just too
many options in our backyard for Buster
to breach and never be seen again.
UPDATED: The following day I did
another Home Depot run and got the
materials for the lid. I didn't document
its construction the way I did the main
section of the hutch, but as you can see
in the addition of the last five photos
in the set it came together quite
nicely.
