Eighty five terawatt hours per yearThat's the predicted output of the Three Gorges Project, originally expected to provide 10% of China's annual electricity needs, but now more realistically will only provide 3% due to China's ever-expanding appetite for power. It is nearly 2310 meters across (approximately 1.4 miles). The humidity and haze were thick enough that we could not see the other side of the river.

ShanghaiWe took a short stroll on the Bund in the morning and watched the empty container ships parade out to sea. Our guide informed us that the area across the river was nothing but farmland 15-20 years ago.

Most of the students in the classroom we visited were giggly and happy and acting like third-graders everywhere when they didn't have to study. But when you tried to take their picture, they got a serious look on their face and flashed you the peace sign, as if it was the customary thing to do when getting your picture taken. All the kids would jostle for position in front of the lens to have their mugs taken (they got a huge kick out of seeing themselves on the LCD display), but they wouldn't crack a smile. Except this girl; she beamed at the camera every chance she got. It was lovely.
