US Marine Corps Memorial

Today is the 63rd anniversery of the historic photograph "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima." The photo was taken during the first few days of the Battle of Iwo Jima, which lasted between February 19 - March 26 1945. (See Wiki)

The US Marine Corps Memorial is modeled after this image. I felt today was a good day to post this.

    Great shot! Looks fantastic!

  28. carré (63 months ago | reply)

Very well done. But, imho, the buildings behind spoils the picture.
I would have done something like the crop in the note: only the memorial and the sky to get something more dramatic.

  29. Arnath (63 months ago | reply)

I'm not such expert on hdr. Actually, I don't know nothing about it!
Well, hdr apart, I think you were either lucky and smart to capture this statue with such scenery as background. I think carré as a point with the crop. You should try it, just to see what result you could get. But in my opinion it's not that important.
I think the colors of sunset gives a dramatic way to the all photo, specially when we think about what that statue represents and means.
I also like that detail on the blowing flag.
    Nice work!

  30. mmparthi (63 months ago | reply)

I like this picture theres no doubt abt it especially the sky and the sun rays on the statues.....but wht I dnt like is the lack or originality....ive seen this capture many times in many different ways so other than the skill of photography theres nothing to entertain me in this!

  31. djpd (63 months ago | reply)

    Wow...impressive shot...
    HDR works very well here!
I also like the crop suggestion...so the distracting buildings in the background would be gone...
    Nice picture!

This is a great shot and the sky really seems to bring some drama to shot. But what I really like about it is the colour and the kind of darkness it has seems to suit the subject of the photo. The moving flag also turned out well with the movement. I like that its a HDR shot the only problem I see is the around the soldiers it is lighter, and I know that sometime that happens with HDR shots, but I doubt that most people would notice that. You should be proud of this shot, it is really well done.

    US Marine Corp Memorial

Here is the suggested crop suggestion, I'm not really wild about it. The way the monument gets chopped just doesn't seem right -- but I figured I'd post it for all to see. I do agree that it would be better if the buildings weren't there. If I took this from a lower perspective I would have lost the colors despite the buildings not being there, so its really a tradeoff.

As far as not being original. I think with such a subject its probably hard to get an original shot, the goal is to capture a highly photographed subject in a different and personal way -- which I think I accomplished. If you search both flickr and google I have yet to see one that looks close to this one. If you've found one, I'd love to see it myself. I guess what I'm trying to say is its not the most original photo, but given the subject I think I have done well standing out from the rest of them.

I'm not positive, but I think it was naturally lighter behind the monument -- I'll have to look at the original. Halo's are certainly an unwanted artifact of HDR, but because they don't seem to be around the buildings and trees I'm thinking that wasn't the case here.

Anyway, thanks for all your comments. I really do appreciate them, and they have and do improve my photography a great deal. I am getting increasingly critical of my photos because of it.

I love your shot! The original... I'm not wild about the crop either, the original has such life and texture and color, I feel robbed in the crop version, like there's something missing... oh yeah, the base!!!

    Beautiful photo nonetheless :D
