Seeing as how I've never worn mine outside the house, I don't know if I can explain it. I can tell you that they're very comfortable and very lightweight. I bought the pair I have because I had been walking all over SF, and found myself in a Shoe Pavilion trying a pair on and thinking they were the most comfortable thing ever. They're nice for wearing around the house, but I can't seem to wear them in public.

I resisted Crocs for a long time, then I broke my baby toe, which despite being the smallest and generally most useless toe, really freaking hurt! It was so swollen that I couldn't fit my foot into ANY shoe I had at the time (including sneakers, Danskos, and forget about heels!) So I bought a pair to wear to practicum (which is in a hospital) and they were the only shoes I could wear for about a month. They have an extra wide boxtoe, cushy support, very light, and since it was winter, I got a pair without holes and they are waterproof.

I agree about wearing out in public. I could only do it if I was wearing long pants or jeans. I see people wearing them with cropped pants or skirts, and that just looks silly. I could see shorts if in a situation that warranted it, say, going to the beach, or shlepping between muddy yards and the house.
