From the Washington Post....The Main street media is not doing it's job!

In the Jones case, there is little question that the traditional media botched the story of an Obama administration official who, wittingly or otherwise, lent his name to those who believe that George W. Bush and Dick Cheney deliberately allowed thousands of Americans to be slaughtered. Some conservatives accused journalists of liberal bias; it is just as likely that their radar malfunctioned, or that they collectively dismissed Beck as a rabble-rouser.

New York Times Managing Editor Jill Abramson told readers online that the paper was "a beat behind on this story" and that while the Washington bureau was short-staffed during a holiday week, "we should have been paying closer attention."

The follow-up news pieces focused on the administration's failure to vet Jones's background. Perhaps the media bloodhounds should be just as curious why they failed to sniff out a story that ended with a White House resignation.

Thumbs Down

Public respect for the media has plunged to a new low, with just 29 percent of Americans saying that news organizations generally get their facts straight.

BREAKING: Senate Votes to Defund ACORN Housing
by Publius

The Johanns Amendment # 2355 to H.R. 3288 passed by a margin of 83 to 7.

**UPDATE** View complete Senate vote here.

The seven “NAYs”:
Burris (D-IL)
Casey (D-PA)
Durbin (D-IL) Gillibrand (D-NY)
Leahy (D-VT)
Sanders (I-VT) Whitehouse (D-RI)

*****

From the Associated Press:

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Senate voted Monday to block the Housing and Urban Development Department from giving grants to ACORN, a community organization under fire in several voter-registration fraud cases. The 83-7 vote would deny housing and community grant funding to ACORN, which stands for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now.

The action came as the group is suffering from bad publicity after a duo of conservative activists posing as a prostitute and her pimp released hidden-camera videos in which ACORN employees in Baltimore gave advice on house-buying and how to account on tax forms for the woman’s income. Two other videos, aired frequently on media outlets such as the Fox News Channel, depict similar situations in ACORN offices in Brooklyn and Washington, D.C. (more…)

Tea Party leader Mark Williams appeared on Anderson Cooper where he denounced those carrying blatantly racist signs against President Obama but then on his blog, he calls the President "an Indonesian Muslim turned welfare thug and a racist in chief."

I submitted the following Freedom of Information Act request to the White House today via US Mail. I modeled it after another Whitehouse FOIA request that I found online here. I've sent two flickrmails now requesting information regarding the Offical Whitehouse photostream on Flickr to the Whitehouse account on Flickr and have received no response. Hopefully the Whitehouse, in the spirit of Obama's oft-campaigned promise of transparency, will choose to provide the information requested based on this formal written request. I'm writing to try and discover any correspondence that may have taken place around Flickr's decision to delete user Shepherd Johnson's Flickr accountafter he posted comments critical of President Obama on the official Whitehouse photostream.

FOIA Officer Office of Administration
725 17th Street, NW
Washington, DC 20503

FOIA REQUEST

Fee benefit requested
Fee waiver requested
Expedited processing requested

Dear FOIA Officer:

Pursuant to the federal Freedom of Information Act, 5 U.S.C. § 552, I request access to and copies of:

All email correspondence to and from representatives of the White House and Yahoo, Inc. regarding the establishment, service and maintenance of the Official Whitehouse photostream on Flickr, Yahoo Inc.’s photo sharing service. I would also like to receive the name and contact information of the primary individual responsible for the maintenance of this Flickr account.

The scope of this request is for documents created between January 20 and September 15, 2009.

I would like to receive the information in electronic format.

As a representative of the news media I am only required to pay for the direct cost of duplication after the first 100 pages.

Through this request, I am gathering information on a case of censorship involving the Flickr account deletion of Flickr user Shepherd Johnson who found his Flickr account deleted after posting comments critical of the President on the Official Whitehouse Flickrstream.

I am seeking this information as an independent blogger for dissemination to the general public.

Release of the information is in the public interest because it will contribute significantly to public understanding of the President’s use of social media as a communications strategy as well as how the White House handles critical commentary through social media channels.

I hope that as the President’s office, in the spirit of Obama’s oft-campaigned promise of transparency, will see fit to honor this information request.

If my request is denied in whole or part, I ask that you justify all deletions by reference to specific exemptions of the act. I will also expect you to release all segregable portions of otherwise exempt material. I, of course, reserve the right to appeal your decision to withhold any information or to deny a waiver of fees.

As I am making this request as a journalist and this information is of timely value, I would appreciate your communicating with me by telephone, rather than by mail, if you have questions regarding this request.

Please provide expedited processing of this request which concerns a matter of urgency.

I look forward to your reply within 20 business days, as the statute requires.

Thank you for your assistance.

Sincerely,

Thomas Hawk

Beth, and that's fine that you hold that opinion, but you are neither a representative of Flickr nor a representative of The Whitehouse, who have both clammed up about any conversation that the two may or may not have had about Johnson. I think any emails between Flickr and the Whitehouse would be interesting to read in light of Johnson's expulsion.

Thomas , it's not an opinion .They are the rules by which we all engage on flickr, or risk being deleted.By our peers. Why you think that the Whitehouse would be bothered with policing this site is interesting.

The "rules" on Flickr are insanely ambiguous. You can have your Flickr account deleted for being "that" guy. Dictionary.com defines "that" as" "used to indicate a person, thing, idea, state, event, time, remark, etc." So basically anyone can be deleted on Flickr for anything. That is not rule of law at all. It's actually the farthest thing from it.

The flickr "rules" say "Don’t upload anything that isn't yours. This includes other people's photos, video and/or stuff you've collected from around the Internet." And yet Flickr staff have images in their stream that they did not take, other people's photos. And they celebrate users who routinely flaunt this rule on the flickr blog.

The fact of the matter is that 99% of the time the "rules" on Flickr are not enforced. Leaving open suspicion that the 1% of the time that they are enforced that it's selective enforcement.

What one person calls "abusive" comments, another calls free speech. This is not fact, this is in fact opinion.

Not responding to emails requesting comment on how the Whitehouse may have communicated regarding Shepherd Johnson is not transparency at all. it is the absolute lack of transparency, requiring a FOIA request as a formal response.

"Why you think that the Whitehouse would be bothered with policing this site is interesting. "

Why wouldn't they be? They bothered enough to set it up and upload and promote photos here.
