Seriously? Really? For someone who is supposedly so intelligent and in the know, he sure has a hard time keeping track of what is going on in this country. Tea party? Never heard of it. One of my planes flying low over Manhattan? What when did that happen? Who allowed that?

And keeping promises? This comments section isn't large enough to list all the "promises" he's broken to the United States people.

too bad we can't add tags or notes. it'd be useful to have notes and tags for each person in each photo, to make it more searchable.

like Eric Holder is in this photo. it'd be swell to tag it and others like it "Eric Holder" so that all the photos with the attorney general in this stream could be collected.

Jerry Patty - i wouldn't agree that it is nothing more than a reality TV program, or that it makes a joke of the the exclusivity of the office.

the presidency has always adapted to new media technologies. did it make a joke of the presidency for abraham lincoln to have his photo taken? for FDR to give addresses over radio? for eisenhower to produce a television ad? for the white house to have a website?

i don't think that a white house flickr photostream is hugely significant one way or the other - it merely reflects another aspect the presidency to adapt to the contemporary media landscape.

afterall, was not the creation of the republic itself was due in no small part to the influence of pamphleteering, newspapers and a free press - the advanced communications technologies of the day? perhaps the messages communicated via a flickr photostream are somewhat superficial, but that's more due to the nature of photography than anything else. that said, because they are posted here under a CC license they might be used to illustrate blog posts that represent a kind of modern equivalent to pamphleteering. there is the potential for a repository of some cultural value to be created here... and the president has been using other services like youtube to announce legitimate, serious policy declarations [whether you agree with the policies or not].

so no, i don't think this photostream makes a joke of the presidency, or a reality TV show - although some of the comments seem to be attempting to. there's a long tradition of mocking the president too, anyway.

This is a terrific photo, if conveniently grabbed at a moment when everyone is deep in thought.

_but_ ..., on a different note:

It's so nice to see the courageous trolls who can only operate through a dehumanized, anonymous interface.

I'd bet many of them would be the first to say "respect the office" if it was their favored person in power.

I ask them, then: at the very least, if you're going to use this forum to "dissent" (though what you're doing hardly counts), do it as a real person, and not as some hack who might as well be getting paid to spew inflammatory garbage.

This stuff matters. It's not some kind of game.

Jerry Patty says "would anyone else agree that things like this photo stream are making a joke of the presidency? The exclusivity of the presidential office has vanished, leaving nothing more than a reality tv like program, with a gold seal.

"

Such a sad state of affairs when Americans forget their own history. The presidency was never meant to be an exclusive office. Why do you think we address the President as "Mr." instead of "Your Highness"?

The open and transparent nature of this President is actually a blessing -- a restoration of democratization in the US. The White House having a presence on Flickr is both open and transparent. True, it's a touch of PR, but it's refreshing to see this side of the presidency without waiting for it to hit the archives of the Smithsonian or LOC and without being reliant on the media to provide these glimpses into presidential life.

Once upon a time, you had to purchase Life Magazine to get a glimpse into the White House. Now, you can freely surf Flickr to view it. I fail to see how this cheapens the presidency or makes a joke of it. If anything, it liberates it.
