Receding into Blindness
In José Saramago's Blindness an entire country is striken by a sudden white blindness. At first, the government tries to contain the epidemic by confining the blind do a former mental institution. However, the fear of the nonblind, the sudden loss of a vital sense, and the lack of any assistance causes the micro-society of the institution to break down. As a concentrated microcosm of the society outside, the walls, the people inside endure all manner of horror, blind to their own roles in perpetuating the horror.
