Near The Devil's Dyke, looking south-west in January.

The sun is setting over the English Channel, just visible behind the downs.

The Boathouse at Frensham Little Pond

The Boathouse at Frensham Little Pond

Frensham Little Pond, along with The Great Pond, is part of Frensham Common; over 900 acres of heathland of Special Scientific Interest in Surrey, UK.

Owned by the National Trust, the heath supports the sand lizard, smooth snake, woodlark, Dartford warbler and nightjar.

The ponds were built in the Middle Ages to provide water fowl and fish for the Bishop of Winchester's table.

A long, elevated ridge, running through the common and separating the ponds is the location of The Kings Ridge Barrows, dating from the Bronze age.

The ponds were drained during WW2 to prevent them being used as landmarks for the Luftwaffe.

Frensham Common is a popular location for film; including The Mummy when the ponds doubled as the Nile, and more recently Snow White And the Huntsman.

In the summer of 2010, almost a tenth of the common was devastated by bush fire.
