tie-dye instructions

    Newer Older

something I've been meaning to write up for camp for awhile. I suspect the tie-dye teachers have gotten tired of explaining all the different styles and how they work. I should have done it sooner as it was actually a lot of fun to doodle it!

**I have changed the copyright on this doodle so that anyone can download it and use it for their group. All I ask is that you don't sell it.**

Anyone have any fun variants easy enough to teach to a crowd? Let me know and I'll add them to my collection!

p.s. for anyone who's never tie-dyed, don't forget to follow the other half of the instructions available at Dharma Trading! (they also sell all the stuff you need and I really recommend their Procion dyes... still brilliant on my kids' T-shirts after three years!)

p.p.s examples of actual shirts shown here.

coloured glass, Non-Dairy Creamer, and 45 other people added this photo to their favorites.

clear doodles...fine instructions !!!!! would make a good poster...and I am sure you know that !!

thanks Bev and Shin! Yeah, Bev, I designed it to be a poster - I hope it's helpful.

But I lay awake last night thinking of all sorts of other tie-dye patterns to try out and write instructions for! Nothing like making everything more complicated than it is... ;o)

Great! I had very similiar idea, just little bit different approach. Can you understand it?

yes, I understand it! very nice.

but as strange as it may sound, I'm probably not the best judge of your drawing, because I already know how to do the tie dyes you're explaining. I don't know how well it would work for someone new to tie-dye, but it sure is a nice compact way to 'remember' the designs for yourself!

I'll have to try that 'spider' though, next time I do tie-dye! I've always got someone who wants to "do something no-one else has tried before"....and wants me to show them something new! This will be my new ticket...for a little while!

oh well, it was meant for recording ideas, not for learning. But somehow I felt like you had very similiar symbols i your drawing, so I simply HAD to write you. :-)
I like yours too. Nice to meet you.

Love this! Gonna have to make something similar for tyedyeing with Girl Scout troops! It will work much better than my "explanations". =p

I wish I had this when I tie dyed with the volleyball team! Maybe we will try it again this year with much better results.

Yes! you're right, it is a great way of recording stuff for your own use - I didn't think of that! Sure beats reinventing the wheel and I might have to do that for some of my more complicated "don't bother explaining it to campers" designs.

if you like, you are welcome to print out this sheet to use with Girl Scouts, volleyball teams or any other groups that you're dyeing with! Hmm, I should go change the copyright license so everyone feels free to use it!

And maybe we can make some more visuals for other designs...

Thank you! This is exactly what I was looking for, everywhere on the internet you can find text descriptions and photos of finished shirts, but I've been hard pressed to find a visual example of what each technique produces. Thank you thank you thank you!

Yes! My camp isn't doing tie-dye this year or last, but I'm itching to do it again, maybe this summer. If I do I will write down what works!

you're welcome! and thank YOU for letting me know! I'm so glad it was useful to you!
