~ '57 Chevies, Budweiser, Lucky Strikes, Bob Dylan & Buddy Holly (A Love for Real) (Not Fade Away)

    Newer Older

    “nice sunset,
if i do say so myself,” says god
“yes, it has buddha nature,” say the buddhas
from the back seat of a ’57 chevy
idling on the sand just south of gold beach
“you’re always saying that,” says god
    “what?” ask the buddhas
“you know, everything has buddha nature,” says god
    “well, everything does,
at least before thinking gets in the way,”
    says one of the buddhas
“why are you so anxious to deny thought?”
    asks god
“i mean, squeezing consciousness out of heat and carbon
is pretty good, as far as acts of creation go,” he continues
“yes, but, the minute you conceptualize something,
it ceases to be real,” answers one of the buddhas
“would ya mind handing me another budweiser?” asks god,
“i’ll check and make sure it’s real.”
one of the buddhas grabs one
from the watery ice in the cooler
and hands it up to god
    who pulls the tab
and fires up another lucky strike
a ring of blue smoke curls up
    and swirls out the window
    everyone is silent
    a christmas tree air freshener
hangs from the rear view mirror
mister tambourine man plays on the radio
    over and over again
yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky
    with one hand waving free
    silhouetted by the sea,
    circled by the circus sands
    with all memory and fate
    driven deep beneath the waves
let me forget about today until tomorrow
“greatest rock and roll song ever,” says god
    “well, maybe,” say the buddhas,
“but couldn’t we listen to a new song
    every once in awhile?”
    god fades away and
takes another long drag on the lucky
mysteriously, the song changes on the radio
my love is bigger than a cadillac
i try to show it and you drive me back
your love for me has got to be real
for you to know a just how i feel
a love for real, not fade away
“a little buddy holly? asks god
    “sweet,” say the buddhas
“too bad cat stevens converted to islam,” says god
“yeah, we were kinda partial to
“buddha and the chocolate box,” say the buddhas

The 60's aren't just "coming back" my good American brother of the lens - they've arrived, left a stain on the carpet and a rip in the chaise longue, and fucked-off again pronto - leaving the greying, bemused and jovially bell-bottomed likes of you and I to simply record the fast dissipating vapor-trail with our Zero-69s and ancient Ikontas, all over again.

But that always was going to be how the knife-slash of pre-determination was certain to manifest itself in our little transatlantic-shuttle world of film, dear old Mackio.

      It is our pre-destined ROLE!.

For as the whole universe, and everything in it, from the largest galaxy, to the very smallest quantum fragment, unwinds itself subject to the Second Law of Thermodynamics -

      Please see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_law_of_thermodynamics

      - and ever-increasing Entropy, someone has to be there to save and express the oh-so fleeting wonders of "~ '57 Chevies, Budweiser, Lucky Strikes, Bob Dylan & Buddy Holly (A Love for Real) (Not Fade Away)" on film (The God's [plural] own true medium of record!), according to Film's most magical and heartrendingly eternal beauty - and then commit such to the www vagaries of Flickrization, that it might be blasted out into the greater universe via satellite-leakage, to spread it's message of Most Holy Mackster Hope at The Speed of Light (Just view and comprehend the majesty of the image above anyone, and tell me that it doesn't express the most wonderful "hope", for all), for (quite literally) ever and ever and ever - for as long as the universe itself shall endure.

Is there a single roll of out-of-date120 Agfa slide film in some strange alien's freezer (Maybe their whole world is one big, giant film-freezer, guarded by an army of brilliant space-monkeys, hammering out Shakespeare and Dylan Thomas, on ranked millions of old Remingtons?), just waiting to be x-pro'd, anywhere else in the whole universe?... I would ask Cat Stevens, if he were trapped here in Folsom drinking fine Caribbean rum with me right now.

Be good my good brother Mack,,, and most steadfast in your work.

      Amen Corner.
