CHRISTIAN MARTYRS / DAVID HAMILTON National Gallery of Victoria
"THE VICTORY OF FAITH" by Irish painter George Hare (1857-1933) Known as a portraitist "Hare also specialized in painting semi-nude women and children in historical and allegorical settings. The "Victory of Faith" ----was his first major treatment of the nude. It represents two Christian martyrs on the eve of their sacrifice to the lions. The depiction of naked women in chains seemed to hold a SPECIAL INTEREST (my caps) for Hare, and he returned to this subject frequently."
