Wal-Mart Pollution - Derby, KS

Wal-Mart Pollution - Derby, KS by Brave New Films.
Melanie McMillan documents Wal-Mart's carelessness as part of Operation Teal, a website and senior thesis project launched after observing an unsettling amount of discarded Wal-Mart bags near a store in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

This observation led to an inquiry about the number of discarded bags at other Wal-Mart locations and what relevance it has to the number of years a store has been in operation.

This project sets out to provide evidence that Wal-Mart Supercenters are a detriment to the communities in which they appear and the impact of the teal shopping bags is a function of population density.

Wal-Mart always has good bags for throwing away trash, you should have grabbed a few for back home.

I hope you realized that Operation Teal actually had an impact, albeit not the one intended. Wal-Mart has since switched to less easily identifiable white plastic bags to avoid negative publicity.
Unfortunately, here in Tulsa, the Quik Trip chain of convenience stores has just switched to plastic bags, despite recent headlines about San Francisco banning them due to environmental and aesthetic reasons. Will QT become the Wal-Mart of convenience stores? They are well on their way, with plans to build store number 500 on the old Camelot Hotel site once it is demolished.

Perhaps I'm just an evil conservative but...

How exactly is it Wal Mart or QuikTrip's fault that the customers are careless inconsiderate bastards that litter?

Personally I never get a bag from QuikTrip (Kwik Shop now that I don't live in Wichita) or Wal Mart unless I have a lot of stuff. Then I use the bags later as trash bags in my office and home. Not for environmental concerns - but why should I buy bags when stores will give them to me?

I remember a push to get stores to use plastic bags sometime back because people were complaining that too many trees were being cut down for the paper bags.

So either people need to stop using bags or stop complaining about what kind of bags stores use.

Or maybe, just maybe if someone is getting only one or two items they could simply state they do not want a bag in the first place. that seems easier than discarding it in the parking lot anyway.
