NYC - Brooklyn - Williamsburg: Brewers Row

This stretch of North 11th Street, between Wythe Avenue and Berry Street, was named Brewers Row in 2000 to commemorate the once thriving hops industry in Northern Brooklyn. At the turn of the twentieth century, there were nearly fifty breweries in Williamsburg and Bushwick, and Brooklyn produced more beer than Detroit and Milwaukee combined. German ummigrations making use of Long Island's pure water were the main culprits, but the post-prohibition trend towards national-brand macrobrews doomed local industry.

In 1996, the Brooklyn Brewery acquired a former matzah ball factory on this street and converted it into a functional brewery--the first successful commercial brewery in New York City since Schaefer and Rheingold closed their doors in 1976.
