Austin - UT: LBJ Library and Museum
The Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum, situated on a 30-acre site on the University of Texas at Austin, was dedicated on May 22, 1971. The museum tells the story of Johnson's life, from his childhood in central Texas to his days as congressman and Senator, through the Vice Presidency and the assassination of John F. Kennedy and onto his groundbreaking Great Society legislation as the 36th President of the United States. The library houses 45 million pages of historical documents, 650,000 photos and 5,000 hours of recordings from President Johnson's political career.
The iconic ten-story building was designed by award-winning architect Gordon Bunshaft of Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill, and R. Max Brooks of Brooks, Barr, Graeber, and White. It is modern and monolithic, with an unornamented travertine exterior. The interior features a Great Hall with a ceremonial staircase and a four-story, glass-encased view of the archives collection.
