NYC - 13 and 15 West 54th Street
13 and 15 West 54th Street were designed by Henry J. Hardenberg from 1896-97, as a speculative venture. Hardenberg's love of Northern European architecture, evident at his famous Dakota Apartments can also be seen in these residences with their banded window enframements and tapered pilasters. In 1906, No. 13 was purchased by John D. Rockefeller; it was the home of his son , John D. Rockefeller, Jr. until 1918. Later, Governor Nelson Rockefeller used the house as an office; he died here in 1979. Nelson Rockefeller purcahsed No. 15 in 1955, and for many years it housed the Museum of Primitive Art (now the Michael Rockefeller Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art)
13 and 15 West 54th Street were designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1981. Would you like to comment?Sign up for a free account, or sign in (if you're already a member). |
