The standing portrait statue of Maurice J. Tobin, designed by sculptor Emilius Ciampa, was installed at the Charles River Esplanade along the Hatch Shell Circle in 1958. The 10-foot tall bronze statue was commissioned by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Maurice Joseph Tobin (1901-1953), a protégé of Mayor James Curley, was the 47th Mayor of Boston from 1938-1945 and the 56th Governor of Massachusetts from 1945-1947. He also served as the United States Secretary of Labor under President Truman.
