NJ - Hoboken: Stevens Institute of Technology - Babbio Center - Boswell Engineering Terrace
The Lawrence T. Babbio Center, a six-story, 95,000 six-story, 95,000 square foot structure, functionas as the headquarters for the Wesley J. Howe School of Technology Management at Stevens Institute of Technology. Construction was made possible by a generous personal gift of $6 million from Lawrence T. Babbio, Jr., the Vice Chairman of Verizon and the Chairman of the Board of Stevens Institute, and an additional $18 million in contributions from strong Stevens supporters, including Verizon, Lucent, AT&T, the State of New Jersey and other esteemed Stevens alumni.
The architect for the Babbio Center was Ecoplan, P.A.. A visually strong masonry building is offset by a transparent glass atrium entrance hall and a sculptural circular stainless steel structure containing the main auditorium and several levels of lecture halls. Dynamic interior spaces are created by the interaction of these three major shapes. Accent lighting encircles the auditorium and more dramatic lighting enlivens the main atrium space, creating a glow to be seen throughout the campus and across the Hudson.
The Babbio Center was built with sustainable technologies, a showcase “environmentally conscious” structure.
