Las Vegas: The Mirage - Volcano
The 3,323-room Polynesian-themed Mirage was built by developer Steve Wynn and opened on November 22, 1989 on the former gounds of the Castaways. It was the first hotel Wynn's Mirage Resorts (later MGM Mirage) built, with the financial aid of junk bond. Wynn and the Mirage helped set a new standard for Vegas resorts and stem the decline in tourism and prestige that began in the 70's.
An artificial volcano in front of the hotel "erupts" periodically during the evening. After sister property Bellagio opened, Wet Design, the company that helped create the Fountains of Bellagio attraction, redid the technology behind the volcano effect to make it more spectacular. To hide the smell of the natural gas used for the fire effects, The Mirage pumps out a Piña Colada scent.
