Pygmy Cedar
Pygmy Cedar (Peucephyllum schottii) in its prefered habitat - rocky steep slopes. Ironically, its not a cedar at all, but belongs to the same family as dandelions, Asteraceae. It grows in the Mojave Desert and (I'm pretty sure) the Sonoran Desert. The waterbody in the background is lake mead. This was taken on a hike in the Jimbilnan Wilderness, near Overton NV.

Uploaded on Nov 24, 2009 Hey! Dipsacus!Gotta love a plant with a genus name like that. The dried flower stalks remind me of little medievel weapons. I was impressed to find them in flower in SE Oregon in...November!

They aren't kidding! Cow Creek Ranch is located along highway 95, just north of Jordan Valley, Oregon.
Uploaded on Nov 24, 2009 owyhee goop
In the Owyhee region, this stuff will literally clog your wheel wells if you try to drive the dirt roads when they're damp. As for hiking, its a pretty big nuisance. Although it was cloudy, by late afternoon (on a brisk november day) most of the goop had begun to harden.
