Melakwa Lake by Walks On Rocks

Melakwa Lake

ick! snow! The mountains aren't attractive to me anymore. The excercise was much needed though. The trail from Denny Creek (off I-90) to Melakwa Lake is about 4 1/2 miles each way with 2,200ft of gain. The forest service has this to say about the trail:

"This trail begins in an old forest, continuing about one mile with minimal elevation gain before crossing a bridge over Denny Creek. Here, large slabs of exposed bedrock create a natural waterslide. It is a popular place for picnics in the summer. The trail climbs up the river valley passing several waterfalls and offering open views of nearby peaks. At Hemlock Pass the trail peaks before dropping slightly into Melakwa Lake basin, shortly after the junction with Melakwa Lake Trail #1011 to Lower Tuscohatchie Lake. "

Heading home to Spokane from a weekend trip to west side Washington, I decided to stretch my legs a little. The weather was especially nice, this Sunday November 1 - so why not!?

Routes from Holden to Entiat Meadows by Walks On Rocks

Routes from Holden to Entiat Meadows

This was day 5 of a 6 day loop following our departure from the official Pacific Crest Trail. The view is from the summit of Mount Maude, looking northeast back toward where we came. We climbed Mt. Maude from south face, via Ice Lakes.

The entire loop was made possible by a mountaineering experience I had with Epic Adventures (EWU) back in 2005. Had I not crossed this ridge once before on a guided trip, I probably wouldn't have made it part of our route. Without having visited a place, I must rely entirely on my ability to interpret topographic contours and Google Earth imagery. Judging by contours and imagery alone, I would assess this ridge as 'risky' or rather, 'maybe its passable and maybe its not' (bearing in mind Wendy and I avoid exposed rock climbing on a backpacking trip). Notice how in 2009, we avoided the rock gully. From the other side of the ridge, the rock gully actually looks like the easier way to go. However, our 2009 route over the ridge was a cinch.

Sunrise Alpenglow at Minaret Lake by Walks On Rocks

Sunrise Alpenglow at Minaret Lake

The official Pacific Crest Trail and John Muir Trails skip this portion of the Sierras. Wendy was really unhappy while we were up there, crossing some treacherous snow, but as often is the case, we both really enjoyed the adventure the danger had passed.

From Mammoth Lakes to Tuolumne Meadows, Wendy and I planned a 3-day segment on our PCT journey. Being accustomed to packing for 5, 6 or 7 days, we had room in our bags for more weight. So...we brought pizza and beer for each night, instead of the usual camp food.

Evolution Lake by Walks On Rocks

Evolution Lake

There is a song about Evolution Valley, by "Hot Buttered Rum String Band" Every time I see photos or think of the place that song gets in my head.

Anyhow, its a really beautiful area, probably my #1 place to recommend

krummholtz in the Minarets by Walks On Rocks

krummholtz in the Minarets

Near Cecile Lake, Sierra Nevada. Crossing from Minaret Lake to Iceberg lake was probably the most dangerous part of our entire PCT adventure. The high lake basins were completely snowed in. Being a cold, rainy morning, the slopes were hard packed ice. Since this is not along the official John Muir Trail or Pacific Crest, there were also no boot-packed footprints to follow. A glissade above Iceberg Lake would have meant sliding right into a hole in the ice and into the lake. It wasn't THAT bad though, just had to be extra careful.
