These are amazing! I'd love to see this as a poster.

  3. Eric Fischer (23 months ago | reply)

Thanks! I think I need to figure out how to make it dense enough at a higher resolution before it would work as a poster, though. Maybe the problem will solve itself as more data accumulates over time.

  4. MFMinn (23 months ago | reply)

Who knew Marin was so relatively tweetless?

  5. guzaeraholo (23 months ago | reply)

I would love to make the same type of image for where I live. How did you make it?

  6. Eric Fischer (23 months ago | reply)

I think the Marin tweetlessness might have something to do with lack of population density there.

guzaerahola, where do you live? I might have one for you already. The Flickr locations come from the Flickr search API. The Twitter locations come from the Twitter streaming API (the "locations" filter).

Beautiful pictures, but I would do the entire Bay Area...

  8. Eric Fischer (23 months ago | reply)

You're right, a larger regional map would be appropriate here (and probably in the Netherlands too). I need to make an interactive version of this so that I can get over the compulsion to have every image have exactly the same scale.

I really like the shape around the airport at the bottom center. It looks like it matches the layout of the terminals.

  10. Eric Fischer (23 months ago | reply)

I think it probably does. You can see the same kind of thing going on at the Atlanta and New York airports too.

Interesting that Silicon Valley and the Peninsula does not seem to have a lot of photo opps

  13. Kyiakhalid (23 months ago | reply)

The "post to Flickr" dots are most likely from smartphones, so the Marin and Peninsula lack thereof might stem from lack of cellular signal (interfering geography, not enough towers,...).

Silicon Valley isn't even shown on this photo. There's probably many tweets and Flickr posts down there.

Fascinating image. Pretty unique, I'd say, and an insight into a very 21st-century aspect of human spatial behaviour. Thanks for posting this.

What is that white spot over in Alameda?

  40. Eric Fischer (22 months ago | reply)

The white spot in Alameda is the Park Street commercial area. The one that you may be thinking is in Alameda is the Oakland Coliseum.
