Could it be because our phones rarely have geo-location, and locals tend not to add geo information manually?

@ericrasmussen: Venice in fact has locals (real locals, those who work there living in the mainland, and a large host of university students of the isle, which should account as locals for the purpose of such a visualization). But tourists outnumber them in an overwhelming way.

it's about 30-40 thousand locals (for the insular part of venice) vs. 15 millions tourists each year, so yes, we're looking at an enormous difference. Also, awesome visualization.
