RIP: Texas Chute Out ( Six Flags 1976-2012 )
The Dallas / Fort Worth area lost two icons this month. Most recently, Big Tex caught on fire at the State Fair. They still have the frame, and I know he'll be back next year. I haven't located any of my Big Tex stuff to post just yet.
The other lost icon is the Texas Chute Out at Six Flags Over Texas. I was saddened to hear that it was demolished after 36 years in the park. This was a slow parachute drop ride that towered high above the Arlington park.
I remember when the Texas Chute Out opened, but I didn't have the courage to ride it until a few years after -- and it was very memorable.
What I have to show here is a large pinback button from 1976 commemorating the opening of the ride. And that's Cyrus Cosmo, the beloved mascot of the park at that time.
You can see photos and a video of the tower being toppled, courtesy of the Dallas Morning News here -- www.dallasnews.com/entertainment/headlines/20121010-texas...
Gone but not forgotten.
