Bottle Caps Candy - 1972 / 1973

    Newer Older

Here's another super special candy collectible -- a Bottle Caps wrapper from Sunline / Breaker Confections.

I have memories of this particular package, buying them at a certain store where we lived in 1974. One of my earliest specific candy memories, I'd say.

I had long wanted one of these beauties, and was happy earlier this year to find a 1980s version that I posted here previously. Then I got this 1970s wrapper about a month later, and from a different source.

The lady that I got this from told me that she saved it in "late 1972 or shortly thereafter". So I'm calling it 1972-1973 and wondering if this might be the very first Bottle Caps wrapper design. I've found through the US Trademark office that Bottle Caps were introduced in February 1972 (tarr.uspto.gov/servlet/tarr?regser=serial&entry=72417187).

On back is the flavor line-up at the time -- Root Beer, Orange, Cola and Lemon-Lime. They would later add Grape, remove Lemon-Lime and then add Cherry. I do remember enjoying the Lemon-Lime flavor as a kid.

Here's my Wonka branded Bottle Caps wrapper from 1985. The 1970s wrapper is quite a bit larger.

Yeah, this is a true candy classic. I'm reasonably sure this was the inaugural package design used.

Now THIS brings back memories! I recall vividly buying this exact Bottle Caps package when going to the movies with my family to see Disney's "Now You See Him, Now You Don't" in 1972 at our local cinema. (I remember it starring a young Kurt Russell).
The reason I remember this so well is that it was the first time I ever had Bottle Caps, and so I kept the packaging for years in my bedroom desk.
I also remember giving all the root beer ones to my dad, because I HATE root beer. (and black twizzlers). ;-)

I don't remember when I first encountered Bottle Caps but it was pretty early. Thought the candy was a just a larger poor tasting Sweet Tart but I loved the packaging. Great graphics. Like Tom I saved the wrapper for awhile.

I bought some bottle caps not that long ago. They're not shaped like bottle caps anymore. They're just round candies, with some ridges on the sides. Disappointed.
